STRANGE-Music CDs pop in,mount then disappears from Desktop/iTunes

Hello all.

Something a little strange is going on - I was importing songs from some of my "older" CDs that I purchased a while back ago. As per normal, when the CD is being pop in, it appeared on the Desktop as an "Audio CD", iTunes is ON, a moment the name change to the name of the CD and also would appear in iTunes, *but as soon as that split second it totally disappears from the Desktop and iTunes, as if no CD is being inserted.*

*I have to press 'eject', pop the disc out, mount the CD again 2nd time, then it will "stay"*

(OR)
When the CD disappeared, I launch Disk Utility and the CD icon is there, just grey out, pressing "Mount" would also bring the CD "back"

A while back I had just ran Hardware Test for other reasons and everything is OK, *so what could be this strange problem?*

Thanks and cheers

I am experiencing the almost exact same phenomenon, except the disk does not even show up for a moment. Every other music cd I insert just disappears, doesn't register in itunes (set to automatically import it, then eject it), or the finder. Based on your description, I checked disk utility and was at least able to see and eject it there, rather than rebooting every time.
I don't think age of the cd has anything to do with it, I have a broad range, and this is my second intel iMac, my previous one (1 year older, 20" also a white iMac) never had any issues with any of my cds, and I am working with the very same disks. Something's funky. A driver issue, mayhap? My old iMac was on 10.4.x, this one is on 10.5.x.

Cheers -

Hi exignis, thanks for sharing the info... looks like "we are not alone". From what you have described, I doubt it is a hardware issue, i.e. the SuperDrive. Leading me to think it may have to do with the latest version of iTunes (You did update to that?)

Let's see if any more people are facing the same problem...

Cheers

Hi all.

I updated to OS 10.5.2 a while back but have not updated to the latest iTunes yet. Since then I have imported a few commercial music CDs and they seemed OK, i.e. mount on the first attempt, did not disappear off the Desktop like in the past.

Will continue to monitor this and see what happens next...

Cheers

I am having the same issues. I just took the time to import about 400 CD's and let me tell you . . . this problem s u c k e d. When I called the local store to inquire about it - of course they said it would NEVER happen.

Anyway, I've taken a few notes and have narrowed down a few things that seem to "aggravate" this problem and/or make it happen over-and-over again. Here's a quick rundown . . .

1. HEAT - the hotter the machine, the more often it'll happen. As I write this, I've been importing music for about 4 hours. Of the last 25 or so CD's I inserted, only 2 mounted properly. When it's really hot (heat-soaked) it'll happen every time. When the CD's come out they are really hot.
2. CHEAP CDROM's - Almost every CD that I can see through a tiny bit when held up to the light will fail to mount initially. Older/thicker ones mounted more often - until iMAC got heat-soaked.
3. REBOOT TIME - yes . . . I actually said it. In my case, if I reboot (cold machine) then I can import about 12 or 15 CD's before the problem occurs. However, if I have imported 20 or more - then let machine cool off for a few hours, the problem is still there (acting non-heat-related). A quick reboot clears it up for the next 8 or 10 cd's - then it's back to the problem.
4. XMAS MUSIC - Apparently iTunes hates Christmas Music.

My hunch is that there is a timing/wait setting (or error-checking mechanism) that needs to be tweaked a bit. Maybe the faster processors and/or drive uncovered it or something.

I don't know - I just know that my initial thought that I could insert a CD and walk away has been incorrect.

How many people have to report something before it actually becomes an issue that the developers will look at? I'm a bit disappointed with my first iMAC purchase - I hope this isn't reflective of all of the hardware and software.
