STRANGE-Music CDs pop in,mount then disappears from Desktop/iTunes

Hello all.

Something a little strange is going on - I was importing songs from some of my "older" CDs that I purchased a while back ago. As per normal, when the CD is being pop in, it appeared on the Desktop as an "Audio CD", iTunes is ON, a moment the name change to the name of the CD and also would appear in iTunes, *but as soon as that split second it totally disappears from the Desktop and iTunes, as if no CD is being inserted.*

*I have to press 'eject', pop the disc out, mount the CD again 2nd time, then it will "stay"*

(OR)
When the CD disappeared, I launch Disk Utility and the CD icon is there, just grey out, pressing "Mount" would also bring the CD "back"

A while back I had just ran Hardware Test for other reasons and everything is OK, *so what could be this strange problem?*

Thanks and cheers

I Fixed my problem - and it kinda ****** me off too.

I found an old QUE USB2 external drive in the bottom of an old box and just for grins plugged it in. Imac found it and it works flawlessly.

So, what ****** me off? It can import music into iTunes faster than the drive built into the machine - and I already imported over 400 cd's. I must have spent 10 hours futzing with that bizarre device-arrival-but-can't-mount problem.

With all of these issues being reported - why hasn't Apple even tried to fix the problem - much less acknowledge the issue?

I have the same problem on my brand new macbook pro running 10.5.2.

Had not tried the disk utility thing but it seems ejecting the cd then reinserting it usually gets it recognized.

I'm glad at least that the eject button works as it seems to know there is a disc inside, despite not showing it on the desktop.

Old cd's, new cd's doesn't seem to matter. Was so excited to get this larger HD in my new laptop so I could rip many more of my cd's and now the process is quite frustrating.

Not a word about this from Apple's official support! Come on you guys, WAKE UP! IS ANYBODY LISTENING? How many reports of identical issues does it take to get flagged as a "legit" issue. As it seems to not depend on the machine (imacs, MBP's, etc) it is apparently an OS issue. Get on it APPLE!

I am having the exact same problem as well ever since upgrading to Leopard (NEVER had this problem in Tiger). I'll insert a music CD, it'll mount both on the desktop & in iTunes for a brief moment then disappear. Every single time I insert a CD.

The eject key hit twice will eject it.

When I reinsert the music CD a second time, it shows up both on my hard drive & in iTunes & plays fine.

But what a pain!

Same problem here! Glad to know I'm not going crazy. I've been trying to import CD's to iTunes using my OWC external CD/DVD drive. When I insert the disc, it never shows up on the desktop. When I first started using my new iMac with the external drive I didn't have any problem with it. I've since installed 10.5.2. I wonder if Apple did something that prevents importing or even playing a CD from the external CD/DVD drive. I plugged it into my Powerbook with Tiger (10.4) and it works fine. It's bad enough that Leopard dropped Classic, but this is a real pain if Apple did this to me. I bought the external drive because it cost me over $400 to replace the Superdrive in my Powerbook. I don't know what they'll charge to replace the Superdrive in my iMac, not that I want to give them the chance.

i've had this happen two or three times too... and it's not Leopard-specific, i'm in 10.4.11. I'm also having other issues, like it will burn regular CDs but not mp3 CDs (see other thread). And right now, it's got a failed-write CD stuck in it that doesn't even show up in Disk Utility.

The biggest common denominator seems to be iTunes 7.6.2... does everyone here have 7.6.2? (please post your itunes version to help document this stuff as a buggy update, as all kinds of threads and posts indicate)

I tried burning a DVD image file to my external drive and it worked fine. Also, playback was fine. Then I tried burning a CD from an iTunes playlist and it burned OK, but when I re-inserted it into my external drive, I got a message "Can't read this disc on this computer". I put it in my CD Player and also the slot on my iMac and it played fine. I went online and found a discussion group about the Pioneer 112D DVD/CD burner used by the OWC Mercury drive. A Pioneer rep said that a batch of 112D's had that problem.. So I called OWC and they said to send the unit back, which I did today. After I sent it I remembered that I had an old Iomega CD burner, so I hooked it up and tried to mount a CD. I got the same warning "Can't read this CD on this computer! So it has to be either the 10.5.2 upgrade or the iTunes upgrade. My external burner worked fine before those upgrades. Anybody know how to uninstall those upgrades?

I am amazed that this issue exists and has existed for so long and there is no fix nor acknowledgment from Apple. I must say I am getting *very tired* of these updates that simply say "increases stability" but never list bugs fixed.

I can confirm that if I quit iTunes and then insert the CD, the CD will mount then open iTunes.

I know Apple monitors these

Hello,

I've various problems with iTunes over the past few years including recent problems with a CD hanging up and not ejecting until I restart (CD didn't appear on disc utility). This, plus the mobile me debacle and Apple failing to acknowledge problems in a timely manner, if at all, have really put me off.

I had been considering purchasing one of the new macs, but after looking at all the unresolved issues on these discussion boards as well as the various problems I have experienced, I will probably be shopping for a PC.
