I'm having the same problem: unable to play MP4 files in QuickTime Pro (7.4) -- only audio, no video. I first detected it when trying to import an MP4 file to a Keynote Presentation. I can still view MOV, MPG, and WMV files in both QT and Keynote. But, MP4s have a default of 0 x 0 pixels.

I did the following: I opened an MP$ with QT. Under "Window," I clicked on "Show Movie Properties." I selected the video track. On the "Visual Settings" tab, the x and y pixel sizes are off. All MP4 files get zeroed down.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I'd like to get back to work with building my lectures.

Sorry, I am one of many that are not having any problems dealing with MP4 files using QT. However, there are many solutions here that work for some & not for others.

At the top right of this site you will see Search Discussions.

In the blank search window w/the magnifying glass in the left corner type your issue(s).

You will then find several troubleshooting solutions pertaining to your issue for you to try out.

Good luck!

Many, MANY people are having this problem since upgrading to 7.4 (including myself). You'll find that you are able to watch them in iTunes, but not Quicktime. It most likely has to do with the movie rentals. They had to upgrade QT and iTunes prior to MacWorld. I believe they rushed it and the result was a BIG flaw. Search this forum. Apple even locked the most popular thread regarding this issue. Hopefully that means that they are working on a fix!

one more person who can't get it to work.

For the record, all of my post QT7.4 problematic files play perfectly fine in VLC Player. As an alternative to downgrading to 7.3, you guys should download VLC player, and set it up as the default application for MP4 files. Just find one of the mp4s you're having trouble with, and from the finder do a "get info" on it to change the application it opens with. Be sure to set it as a default app for all documents of the same type.

The problem is, I paid for the Pro version of QuickTime, and I've basically lost that functionality now for a large portion of my media.

Thanks Apple!

Lots of people are having the same problem, and lots of people are offering helpful advice on how to search these discussions, helping us all realize that there are multiple threads for the same problem. The most relevant fix I've seen is to use "Pacifist" (a non-Apple solution) to force a downgrade to a previous version of QuickTime. Although that would work-around the issue, I don't consider it to be acceptable.

What is the APPLE solution? By now, APPLE should have released an "official" notice explaining that they're aware of the bug, and offering a patch, or their own work-around (like "Pacifist") for downgrading.

Are there any discussions which are actually moderated by APPLE where this might be made more clear? All I see so far is a lot of people complaining, and helpful people pointing out that even more people are complaining.

I had this problem having just updated my Apple TV OS (13 Feb 08), and having purchased QT Pro 7.4.1.

My Tubesocked YouTube videos would play OK in iTunes, but not on the Apple TV via streaming. They played fine before the updated software.

I solved the issue by going to the iTunes library and identifying the offending Tubesocked MP4 files and passing them through VisualHub to AppleTV, h.264 standard. Now they play fine. Hopefully Tubesock will do something in the near future to make the VisualHub step unnecessary.

Hope this is useful.

I fixed this issue on a MacBook by swapping out the mp4 component for an earlier version.

You can find it in /System/Library/Quicktime/
I advise backing up the original (later version 7.4.1), this is just good practice.

For those of you who don't have an older version kicking about on another Mac, download it here:

Excellent suggestion. I went into "get info" for the mp4 clips that wouldn't play in QuickTime and selected VLC. Double-clicked on the clip and it worked perfectly-playing in VLC. I then converted a new clip in iSquint, and it automatically set it up to play in VLC. Not as good as when QuickTime 7.3 played everything, but an adequate work around until Apple solves this. Thanks

Nevermind, I
downloaded the Quicktime 7.3.1 installer,
opened the dmg file,
clicked on show package contents,
unzipped the Archive.pax.gz file,
and found the components within the Archive folder that it produces.
then i moved those mpeg4 components to the quicktime directory like you explained before and relaunched the finder....

no need for pacifist or archive installs...
thanks a ton!
