Quicktime update

I have recently installed Quicktime on to a new pc - running XP Home. Quicktime version is 7.4.

If I try to use the "update existing software" option in Help, I get a Windows error: "Apple QuickTime: QuickTimePlayer.exe - Application Error" with the details "The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x0040130d". Options are OK or Cancel both of which cause Quicktime to exit.

Quicktime itself seems to be working fine. I have tried all possibilities of remove/reinstall with no success. The same prog on another new PC with a similar setup has no problems.

Any suggestions as to the cause and/or solution gratefully accepted.

This one usually hits folks with nVidia graphics cards (although not everyone with an nVidia card ... it seems to be driver-version-related for the cards). Typically, a similar sort of crash hits when people also try going through the "Update" tab in their QuickTime control panel.

One workaround that works for a few people getting this. (on QuickTime 7.3.1 or 7.4.)

Quit QuickTime.

Opem the QuickTime control panel. Go to the "Advanced" tab. Select "Safe mode (GDI only)", and OK out of the tab.

Now launch QuickTime again. Can you do a "Help > Update Existing Software ..." now, without a crash?

+Will quicktime be fixing this issue or is this an Nvidia fix?+

🙂 Good question ... not sure myself how this one will pan out.

I've given feedback on the issue to the Apple folks. If you've got the time and the inclination, you could also do so ... here's a link through to the QuickTime product feedback form:

But it might also be worth keeping an eye on the downloads page for your PC (if the video card came installed in a "brandname" PC), or the downloads page for the video card itself (if your PC is a home or custom built box, or you added on the video card yourself), to see if any new video driver updates come through addressing the issue.
