Application crashes

I have a 5 year old iMac G4,800MHz,17"FP. I was having wireless connection issues. I took it to the local Apple approved store, the Mac Cafe, for diagnostic and repair. After two weeks, it's still has wireless connection issues and also they said I needed to replace my HDD. Stuck between a rock and a hard place I paid $xxx for a 160GB HDD and the software migration transfer. I get my computer back and everything looks like how it was (preferences intact) but I have a handful of applications that when I open them they immediately crash.
Examples:
1. QuickTime (crashes the minute I click on it)
2. System Preferences (clicked on Desktop and Screen Savers and it instantly crashes)
3. Print CD (Epson R320) (crashed immediately after opening the app)
a. I even re-installed all the drivers and software from the install CD and still no fix.

I'm sure there's more but I hope you can see my re-occuring problem and maybe have a suggestion, other than the Peoples Court, on what to do to correct these problems. Thanks in advance!

I don't have internet connection, remember wireless connection problems was why I brought my iMac in for repair to begin with and the repair tech eventually blamed my problems on a bad Airport Card. New Airport Card is on the way for next week. I backed up my home folder, purchased music and iLife using Apple's BackUp. Won't BackUp also save the corrupted files if there is any?

Nostradennis,

"I don't have internet connection,..."
Use whichever computer you are posting with, to download the the Combo Update I linked to.
Burn it to a CD to use on the iMac to install it.

"Won't BackUp also save the corrupted files if there is any?"
You don't need the backup for the procedure, as you are installing the update over the current system.

Wait, update. QuickTime still crashes so I downloaded the Tiger version to a cd and now that works ok.
Also, the System Preferences doesn't crash when I click on Screen Savers. This is looking better and better. I'll play around with this now for a little bit and keep everybody updated.

Thank you everybody for your tips, knowledge and know how and persevering with me. Much appreciated!

Nostradennis:

Sorry the Combo update did not do it. Now we need to think about what's next. The options I see are an Archive and Install and a complete reformat (wipe), reinstall, and restore data from backup. I favor the latter because you begin with a clean slate, so to speak. However, since a reformat will destroy everything on the HDD, it is imperative that you have a good, reliable, up-to-date backup. Archive and Install is not as intrusive, but even for that a backup is strongly recommended.

My inclination toward the more radical procedure is that we do not know if the issue is with the applications themselves, or somehow more fundamental.

I'd be interested what you think about it.

Cheers 🙂
