Freeze/Crash Question

I have my ATV connected to my IMAC via ethernet. I use a Harmony 880 to control turning on and off the ATV. Most times when I turn on the ATV, it turns on fine. About every 5-10 times, though, it seems to be frozen at the picture of the Apple logo at the center of the screen. I am forced to unplug and replug and it then loads fine. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution? Thank you.

SAME HERE. The question is: is there anyone out there with an Appletv connected via HDMI not having this problem? Is there a on/off sequence we are doing wrong so the interface gets confused and then freezes?

Add to the above that every single movie or trailer I download takes FOREVER. An HD film takes about 7-9 hours for a complete download and a trailer about 2-5minutes. I have a 1MB broadband connection but appears to be quite slow for the ATV.

Any suggestions on this last issue? cause the one above surley has no solution yet

I've been running my Apple TV v2.0 plugged in to my TV via HDMI for about 6 weeks. I use a Harmony 1000 to turn it on and off, and I haven't had any problems until recently (although my issues seems like something a bit different; see below).

For the past couple of days I've been seeing intermittent static on videos (some snow and a pink flash) and then after a few hours the LED starts to flash amber and white. After unplugging it and letting it cool down it works more or less normally for an hour or so before the static and crash. Time to head to the Apple store.

I have an even worse problem. It seems that ever since 2.0 I can't even get past the introduction without some luck. Then, once I do it is guaranteed to freeze the video in screensaver mode.

Eventually, I have a frozen screensaver but full audio still playing my playlists.

So its definitely a video glitch.

I had it connected via my Octava HDMI/Toslink switch for about 6 months without a problem. Then suddenly video almost never works. I also connected it directly to my TV and it freezes.

I think the assumption that its a HDMI switch may be false. I think its just the HDMI interface itself. Direct or switched freezes for me.

Anyone who has a switch tried it direct for a few days?

I'm having the same problem and have been having it for a while now. My AppleTV will "hang" displaying just the apple logo after sitting idle a few days. I just use the Apple remote to control the AppleTV and when it's hung, hitting buttons on the remote flashes the LED on the front of the AppleTV and you hear the normal sounds when pressing a remote button, but the screen doesn't change. I've been unplugging/replugging the power cord to correct the problem.

My 160GB Apple TV is connected via HDMI to Onkyo receiver. I just upgraded to 2.0.2 last night, but from what I've read here, that doesn't fix the problem.

I haven't tried the "workaround" suggested by others to leave it at a submenu. I'll try that next.

This problem seems to be widespread and Apple should be able to easily reproduce and fix the problem. Has anyone reported this to Apple via their support line or at an Apple Store? I'd be interested to know what the official response to this problem is. Even if they said "We acknowledge the problem and are working on a fix.." that would make me happy for now.

1) maybe part of the problem is that you keep plugging and unplugging it which probably isn't too good for the integrity of the appleTV... you wouldn't do that to you computer would you? you can restart your appleTV by pressing and holding on "Menu" and "-"/down button... after a few seconds a menu will appear and one of the items is "Restart".. this is how you should be restarting your appleTV

2) when you are pressing on the remote and the LED is flashing... is it flashing white or is it flashing amber? if it's flashing amber it means that your remote isn't paired to that appleTV... press and hold for 6 seconds on "Menu" and previous/rewind buttons and this will unpair the appleTV. then pressing on "Menu" and next/fast forward for 6 seconds will pair the remote.. that's if you actually have a need to pair it..

Regarding 1)...

Until I read this thread this morning, I didn't know about the "Menu"/"Down" button procedure for doing a restart. I agree that pulling the power plug is not a good way to do a restart, but like I said I didn't know there was another way until I read this thread.

Regarding 2)...

Don't recall the color of the LED. I'll check tonight when I'm home. I've already paired to my remote to my AppleTV (I had to since I have 2 iMacs in the same room). This all works fine...

regarding 1) once the video freezes it doesn't matter what I press. Frozen video is frozen video. Nothing shows up. Again, the issue for me is full sound and frozen video. I can hear the menus (and music if it freezes during playback) I just can't see anything even after the restart.

2) It flashes yellow then goes to solid white. So for me its not the same issue.

are you using HDMI though an HDMI switch or through a receiver?

are you aware that there are issues the HDMI handshake with some devices... and that it likely is not even be apple's fault... more likely it's just apple adhering strictly the the standard since it's only certain devices that there seems to be problems with. it seems more likely that these devices are likely a little more lacks than appleTV can accept.

for me flashing amber light when remote buttons are pushed that goes white means a remote that's lost it's pairing.. have you actually tried un-pairing the and then re-pairing the remote?

i really think that plugging and unplugging is corrupting files on you appleTV... i'd stop doing that.. it's got to be very bad for you appleTV... i'd restore to factory setting... can use the same hold "Menu" and "-"/down button and one of the option is restore to factory settings... then do the upgrades... then never use the unplug method ever again to restart your appleTV...

I am aware of it. I'm using HDMI through an HDMI switch, not a receiver. Its 1.3a compliant and both my DirectTV and AppleTV has worked fine for the 8 months since I introduced it. The AppleTV only started freezing a few weeks after the 2.0 update.

I tried resetting to factory settings with no behaviour change.

I'm going to try component video just to see. If that also doesn't work than the hardware must have fried. If it does...well, i dunno yet.
