I have my ATV connected to my IMAC via ethernet. I use a Harmony 880 to control turning on and off the ATV. Most times when I turn on the ATV, it turns on fine. About every 5-10 times, though, it seems to be frozen at the picture of the Apple logo at the center of the screen. I am forced to unplug and replug and it then loads fine. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution? Thank you.
Yup, I am seeing the same thing. I started doing that and have not had any freezes. Then on my way home from my trip this weekend, my wife calls and asks how to reset the Apple TV, and sure enough, she just left it in the main menu screens.
So this does appear to be a workaround, and also indicates to me this is purely a software issue. Apple really needs to look into this problem and get it fixed!
Count me in as well. I go straight from my ATV via HDMI to tv. I don't even think I see the silver apple. I just get a black screen but can hear the remote noises in the back.
I always go back to the top menu before turning it "off" with the remote. I'm gonna have to try leaving it in a sub menu.
Update... I spoke with an Apple Tech Support representative who was very helpful. He instructed me to run diagnostics on the ATV and then go through a restart (not a reset). Diagnostics found no error; the restart essentially rebooted the system and I was up and running again. Interesting, I checked for, and found, another software update. Since applying the update, the problem has not resurfaced. I've switched back and forth to different inputs; I also refrained from using the ATV for over 24 hours. So far, everything works. Also note however, using info from an earlier posting, I now leave ATV in a sub-menu before switching to a different input.
Happy for now!
Just throwing in my 2¢. My Apple TV also gets stuck on the Apple logo when I have not used it for some time. iTunes seems to see it fine though, since I see it syncing. The remote seems to still be active since I see the light go on and off when I click buttons on it. I also have the Apple TV plugged into a HDMI switch (Monoprice) so that I can plug all my components into my receiver (Sony) and then to the TV (VIZIO) all via HDMI. I have tried shutting down the Apple TV (pressing menu until the light goes out) with no luck. I have not restored to Factory since I don't want it to have to re-sync everything if I don't have to and it does not seem to have helped those who have.
When I said "I have tried shutting down the Apple TV (pressing menu until the light goes out) with no luck." I actually meant, I did this before switching to a new HDMI input, hoping that if the Apple TV was shut down, that when I came back it would not be frozen on the logo.

pressing and hold menu only put the appleTV in standby... menu + "-"/scroll down button give you the option to restart...
my point was that press and hold on menu doesn't actually "shut down" the appleTV it just puts it in standby mode... equivalent to sleep mode on your computer... if your computer freezes putting it into sleep mode (sometimes not even possible) will likely not result in unfreezing it... but actually shutting it down or restarting it will... that's why i mentioned how to restart the appleTV..
I was about to drag my aTV back to the local store for a replacement, but swung by this thread again. I saw that someone mentioned a s/w upgrade. I gave it a try and it's now reporting 2.0.1. I'll stick with this for a few days and see if it relieves my woes.
I am HDMI connected via a Sony receiver and Vizio TV.
I had high hopes the software update earlier this week would solve the problem but alas, just turned on ATV and it was time to unplug it again.
As stated in some of the post here, it does seem where (on which menu/page) one leaves the ATV does seem to have an effect on the problem.
A few other threads on this problem, but I am glad to see a big one like this one to help draw attention to it.
On a related issue (also mentioned throughout this thread), I would like to see a definitive, clear answer to the standby vrs. power on all the time (green light on/off).
I also have exactly the same issue. Current version of AppleTV software v2.0 connected via HDMI to an Integra DTR-7.8 receiver (uses HDMI v1.3a). I would experience the frozen Apple logo screen every few days (I would put the unit in standby each time I was finished a session), and would have to power cycle the unit to get it back. When frozen, it would appear in iTunes and use of the remote would echo the key clicks. I just updated to 2.0.1, but I will need to wait a few days to see if this makes any difference.
I'm on the latest update as of 2008/04/07 (v2.0.1, I believe) and I still see this problem every single time. Only way to stop it from hanging at the Apple logo is to "park" in a submenu and it will restart from there next time. Really wish there was a fix for this...
