Can't get space back from expired rental movie!

I had a rental movie on my iPhone that expired. It doesn't show up under the "Rented Movies" section of the "Video" tab in iTunes anymore. No movies there.

But the iPhone disk space indicator shows 1.74 GB of video content on my phone, which obviously includes the expired movie. I have tried syncing multiple times. I have toggled "Sync movies" on and off. Nothing works- I'm stuck with the inaccessible expired movie.

Help!

I have the same problem as others on this thread. There are 3 rental movies still taking up space on my iPhone. I watched all of them to the closing credits, but not necessarily to the very end of the file. I finished the last one more than a week ago. The only way I can delete a rental movie is to manually delete it before it expires. Otherwise, the movie remains on my iPhone and shows up briefly in the videos list.

Resetting my phone as described above had no effect (I tried it repeatedly). I haven't tried restoring my phone yet because it will take some time, and I don't want to have to restore my phone every time I rent a movie.

Have you downloaded the new iTunes (7.6.1)? I've been wondering if the rental movie problem was one of the bugs they fixed, but I haven't been in a position to try it on an expired movie yet.

If I were you, I'd run software update and get the new iTunes. If you try it, please tell us what happened...

Kim, I did download and install the new (7.6.1) iTunes today. I synced my iPhone and the movies are still there.

I just tried iTunes 7.6.1 on a "stuck" expired movie on my iPhone, and found a way to make it work.

Simply syncing my iPhone via iTunes 7.6.1 did not solve the problem- the expired movie space was still blocked out as before. My next step was to force-quit the iPod app on the iPhone (hold "Home" button until iPhone returns to the Home screen) and then re-start the iPhone. After doing this, I got my space back.

So Apple still has a bug to fix here. But unless what I saw was just a fluke, iTunes 7.6.1 may represent some progress.

I tried everything mentioned in this thread, including force-quitting the iPod app and restarting the phone. Also lots of resetting and syncing with both the previous and the current version of iTunes. Nothing worked. I had to restore.

Also tried: Checked "Manually manage music and videos." I got a warning that all music and videos would be deleted. I said OK. All my music was deleted, but the 3 rental movies were still there.

These were movies that had been on my phone for over a week. I had watched them all the way to the final credits, though not necessarily to the end of the file. I successfully kept another rental movie from getting stuck on my phone by deleting it before its 24 hours were up.

I love my iPhone, but I'm close to hating iTunes and the sync process. And if I ever rent a movie again, which is doubtful, I'll have to set an alarm to remind myself to manually delete it before its 24 hours are up.

This annoying glitch combined with the problems many have had with the latest system upgrade makes me wonder about Apple's testing and QA. I used to happily believe that Apple products just worked. Now I'm getting downright cranky.

I have had the same trouble. I just restored my space by connecting my iphone to my computer. Next I clicked on my Iphone to get the drop down list of what was on my Iphone. Clicked on "rented movies", clicked on "edit", clicked on "select all", clicked on "edit", clicked on "delete". All Done. Space restored!!!!!! Sorry for the elementary nature of these instructions. Not intended to offend anyone.

I had a chance yesterday to try this again with the brand-new iPhone software 1.1.4. I was hoping that the combination of iTunes 7.6.1 and iPhone software 1.1.4 might solve the problem. It does not. The behavior is pretty much like what I described above with iTunes 7.6.1 and iPhone software 1.1.3.

Step 1: Sync iPhone after movie expires. Movie space is still "stuck."
Step 2: Re-start iphone and re-sync. Still stuck.
Step 3: Force-quit the iPod app and then re-start iPhone. Space recovered.

So at least there seems to be a way to get the space back without restoring. But we shouldn't have to jump through hoops to make this work. Let's hope for a bug fix...

Like other folks, I had 2 rented movies that expired on my iPhone and were still taking up space, despite having no other videos on my iPhone (even unchecked "music videos" under the "Music" tab). The graph in iTunes would still tell me I had several GB worth of video on the device. On the iPhone, the rented movies in question would display for a split second when I tapped the videos tab in the iPod app, then disappear, and were even counted as being on the phone under Settings > General> About > Video. (Count read "2", although no videos should have been on the iPhone.)

I originally had the "Manually manage" option unchecked. As soon as I checked it I could see the movies in iTunes under "Rented Movies" when clicking the disclosure arrow next to the iPhone item in the main sidebar. (The ticket stub icon even turned red to show that they were expired/expiring). Then I was able to manually delete them.

Unfortunately, this means I'll have to resync all my music, etc., when I uncheck "Manually manage" again. But it beats having to re-enter all my settings (VPN, etc.), as I would if I went ahead with the "nuclear option" and done a full restore.

It seems like most folks here were already manually managing, so this might not help them, but I thought I'd post this information for folks like me who were desperately Googling for a solution.

OK, I had this same problem and called into iPhone Technical Support. It took a while talking to a nice lady I couldn't understand very well, but we solved the problem without resetting or losing any data. I hope this works for you.

I clicked on the iPhone under "devices" in iTunes, expanded the list by clicking on the triangle next to it, and then on the "Rented Movies" playlist on the iPhone. The expired rented movie appeared in the main iTunes window. I just selected it and deleted it.

I didn't have time to read all the previous responses, so my apologizes if this solution has already been posted.
