Unable to Screen Share To 10.4.11 iBook

I just installed 10.5 today on my aluminum iMac 2.4.

I don't understand how to get screen sharing from my 10.5.1 Leopard iMac to my Tiger 10.4.11 iBook G4 which is on my home network. Both machines are wireless. I've got all the updates on the both machines. I've tried to find posts here but I never see the Share Button that everyone is talking about. I want to observe and control the iBook but not allow any access form the iBook back to the iMac other than file sharing.

I've turned on everything in Remote Desktop Management on the iBook. I can connect to it and transfer files but where is the Share Screen button on the Leopard iMac. It should be next to the Disconnect button correct?

I see the iBook in the Share listed on the left. I click on it and log in. I get a user Folder and Hard drive folder appear. There is a button named Disconnect. But I can't find a Screen Share button. What am I missing or don't understand.

Thanks for any help.

Kelvin

You will need to run Apple Remote Desktop (not cheap) to share a screen with Mac's running an OS before Leopard. I use ARD when connecting to my server because I can just log in without anybody having to authorize the connection at the far end.

On the other hand, you can use a free program on both Mac's named YuuGuu to share desktops, even cross platform with Windows machines. The only problem is that you need somebody at both machines to be able to authorize a connection and share request. This works very similar to the new iChat for Leopard method of finding a machine in the world by using a "buddy" list.

I've read posts in these forums saying it can be done. Tiger can share with Leopard but not the reverse.

I want to see the Tiger machine from Leopard.

I even started the Screen Sharing.app in Leopard on the iMac and entered the local IP address of the iBook and it never connected yet file sharing works great. I rebooted the iBook and no change.

Frustrating.

Thanks, I checked that article. What I want to do is to connect from the Leopard machine to the Tiger machine. My understand is you do not need extra VNC software. The Tiger machine has the Apple Remote Desktop client to allow the Leopard machine to connect and share with the Tiger machine. Its not possible the reverse way without VNC software on the Tiger machine.

The problem is the Leopard machine can't connect despite being able to share files. My home network is a Netgear wireless G router. The iBook and iMac (10.5.1) connect wireless and can share files.

I started up Screen Sharing.app directly from the core services directly, entered the iBook IP address and it still couldn't connect.

The way I read that article is that you do have to have VNC installed on the Tiger machine so that you have a server. I believe the ARD client on Tiger is only available to the actual ARD program.

File sharing has always been available on OS X. Screensharing has not without using the full ARD program (not just the client)which is not included with Leopard. http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/

But then, I could be wrong, again...

I'm using ARD from Leopard to Tiger machines right now and it's working fine, but then again I'm using the real ARD program that I've installed on top of Leopard.

KRitchie,

It is possible doing it the way you are doing it without adding anything else.

I have several clients setup this way. One of them has a G3 iBook running Tiger.
I know it works as I am the one that set it up.

It sounds like you have done the necessary steps.
Turn on Remote Apple Events on the Tiger computer.
Try checking all the boxes for access on the Tiger computer.
Make sure you add your name to the list of users who have access.
I also had File Sharing turned on for the Tiger computer.

All the computers I have setup this way show the "Screen Sharing" box in the upper right next to "Connect As" on the Leopard machine.
Yes, you can only go one way. You can't view the Leopard screen from the Tiger machine.

I don't have the other computers in front of me at this time so I can't tell you exactly what else you might be missing.

I turned on Apple Remote Events on the Tiger computer. When you say checking on all the boxes for access you are talking about the Shared features; FTP, Remote Login etc or all the checkboxes in the Apple Remote Desktop. I've done that in ARD on the Tiger machine and the Screen Sharing button still doesn't show up on the Leopard machine

Is the list of users in the Apple Remote Desktop area? How do you add another user to that list? Are these account names? My account name on the Leopard is the same as on the Tiger machine. I wonder if this would cause an issue? I have only an admin user on each Mac.

I'm hoping the screen sharing feature works from my iMac to another Leopard machine.

I was able to successfully VNC to my Tiger 10.4.11 iBook G4 but I could only do it via the Finder Connect to Server using vnc://192.168.8.5. I entered the password and I was in. Works well. I guess the Leopard machine must query the shared computers to see if they have a VNC server running. I wonder why it doesn't think the iBook has a vnc server. I hope putting another Leopard machine on my network displays the Screen Sharing button. I may upgrade the Tiger machine to test it out.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

IT'S WORKING !!!!!!!!!!

When I installed 10.5, I performed an archive and install. This left the previous system folder. What I just did was to trash that folder, empty the trash and for good measure restart.

When I opened up a Finder window there was the Share Screen button. I clicked on it and entered a password and I'm sharing my 10.4.11 screen.

I don't have the separate ARD software.

Whether it's working for you or not, the point is NOT the application you're connecting with, the point is the software on the remote computer that is "broadcasting". The Tiger computer may need to be up-to-date. To do that, you WILL need the "client" software running. If there was NO Apple Remote Desktop Client software running, you would certainly not be able to connect with screen sharing from a Mac OS X 10.5 computer.

The "previous" System folder has absolutely, positively nothing to do with your issue. The restart, however, may have been a factor.

That would be a mistake on my part. I'm already using ARD and overlooked this feature in Leopard.

For me, supporting machines behind home routers has been the goal. ARD barely made this work due to Dynamic IP #'s, NAT routers blocking port 5900 and ARD's limitation of only having one port.

VNC became the way to be able to get to multiple computers on different ports behind a NAT firewall with each port being forwarded to a specific machine. This still left the problem of Dynamic IP #'s and clients who can't figure out what I mean by going to wimi.com and telling me their IP # 🙂

iChat 4 has solved the dynamic issue with Mac's running Leopard, and YuuGuu has taken care of that issue for other versions of MacOS and Windows. YuuGuu works the same way by connecting with a buddy list and it's cross platform (and free for any number of machines).

Sorry for the mis-information...
