Sleep not working correctly

Recently I discovered that when I let my Mac enter Sleep by itself, as set in the Energy Preference, only the display is going to sleep. I have it set to put the entire Mac to sleep after 10 minutes. This is something that was working before.

I can however, put the entire Mac to sleep if I manually go to the Apple Menu, and use the Sleep, that is there. I rarely actually power the Mac off. I usually just put it to Sleep, or let it go to Sleep by itself.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to resolve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

My most recent software updates:
Apple: OS 10.3.9
recent Java Update
recent Security Update

HP: PhotoSmart Printer Drivers

My Mac is directly connected to a cable modem using ethernet(no router, etc..). The cable modem stays on all the time. I don't think that this has anything to do with it, because Sleep was working correctly with the same cable modem before. I thought that I should mention it, just in case.

Well, now I don't know if anything I've been saying up to this point makes any sense, because...

I just changed my Ethernet DSL Internet connection from using PPPoE to Using DHCP, and now Sleep works fine again.

When I first started with the DSL modem via Sympatico this is how it was set up (I.e. Using DHCP). But I was having certain problems with certain web sites (sites that were working perfectly well were getting "URL can't be found" type messages) and when I went to Sympatico's support pages they said that I should be using PPPoE. So I set up my connection that way. My browsing problems seemed to be solved and I don't recall Sleep Mode being affected at that time. I don't recall any Sleep Mode problems until around the time I installed the OS X 10.3.8 update. Note: I always use Software update, not the stand-alone installers.

So now I have to decide which problem is more annoying; not having a proper Sleep Mode or putting up with the surfing problem. Sheesh.

Anybody have any idea why connecting an Ethernet DSL modem via PPPoE would cause Sleep Mode on an eMac to mis-behave?

You wrote:
"I guess Eudora checks for mail in the backgroud and this doesn't register with the system as activity worthy of affecting the timers. I think the Sleep Mode timers are based on keyboard/mouse activity anyways, not CPU activity."
I have Mail set to check every five minutes and it does not check when the Mac is in sleep mode.

"Activity" w.r.t. inactivity timing can include hard disk activity, which is why some applications that constantly write to Console logs can prevent idle sleep.

Checking for new mail requires the processor (System sleep) to be "awake" to execute the check. Saving new mail on your computer requires the disk to be spun-up if it is sleeping (Standby Mode), but the System would already have to be awake for the drive to be told to spin-up.

Good luck!

Nevertheless, when I have Eudora set to check for new email every 5 minutes and I have Energy Saver set to enter Sleep Mode after 1 hr of inactivity, the computer still enters Sleep Mode, all by itself, after 1 hour.

I don't think I was implying that I thought the computer still checked for mail while it was in Sleep Mode. Obviously that's not the case. It's just that auto-checking for email (with Eudora) while awake does not seem to reset the Sleep Mode timers of the Energy Saver program.

So, by deduction... If chacking for and saving new email requires disk activity then it is not the lack of disk activity that the Sleep Mode timers are measuring. No?

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing this same strange behavior on my pismo, which is not willing to sleep automatically (whether the power manager is set to auto or with personal settings). Manually no problems so far (from the apple menu, or when closing the lid).

What happens when the auto sleep process is about to start is the following, in sequence:
-Computer awake (HD idle spinning, Display on)
-Displays dims then turns off after a few minutes
-HD still idle spinning
-HD turns off minutes later
At this moment, the computer seems to be in sleep mode but the usual sleep light doesn't pulse.

Normally a click on the mouse or a tap on any key would end the sleep mode and wake the Book up, but now it just puts the display on and that's it. No mouse pointer and HD doesn't react. The only possible way out was to force shutdown.

This problem appeared after I upgraded my powerbook's internal HD last week (travelstar 60gb, 5400rpm). I normally installed 10.3 from original CDs and updated it to 10.3.9 via the updater. I re-installed everything else from the original CDs (office, photoshop, etc.).

I have to say that the configuration I have now is exactly the same as before the HD change. I had 10.3.9 and same applications installed, same peripherals, same hardware (except the HD which was a travelstar 40gb, 5400rpm). It used to work perfectly fine.

I tried all the usual fix to no available, performed 3 times clean installs. All the attempts were unsuccessful.

An hour ago, I was doing those kind of things you do when the situation is hopeless. I discovered that I could put the computer to really sleep from this semi "frozen" sleep.

I closed and re-opened the lid 3 times in a row to make the led sleep light to pulse. Once it pulsed I could wake the mac up, normally.
I could repeat this several times.

Well that doesn't fix the problem but I don't have to restart anymore. :-/

My guess is that this silly action on the lid tells to something in the mac, hey you forgot to enter officially in sleep mode! Thus making the mac really sleeping with the pulse light and all. So the system has not frozen...

Well sorry for this very long post. I really hope we'll find out why all these macs won't sleep automatically. This problem is really annoying.

Thanks for replying Joey.

Yes I did and no improvements...

...But I re-installed panther once again from scratch (4th time) and this time I took care of upgrading 10.3 step by step, using the standalone upgrading programs for each versions til 10.3.9 (no combi updates and not through the software updater). What I noticed is that this sleep problem appeared again after installing the latest security update (#5) under 10.3.9 .
Then I repaired the permissions and re-installed this security update. Right after, I opened mail and it asked me some sort of authorization (can't remember exactly but the kind of question it usually asks after a major upgrade).
That did not happen after installing that update the first time, so I guess the re-install process had a positive effect.

And guess what, PowerBook is going to sleep on its own again! At least for now.

I hope it'll stay that way, will keep using the computer normally and confirm.

Dr. Smoke,

I have the console messages you outline below for my Canon scanner. How can I get them to stop pinging?

Thanks,

Tod

3. Applications or processes continuously writing to the Console logs can prevent the hard drive from sleeping, and hence the Mac. Check Console to see if a message is being written every minute or less. In addition to certain HP printers as previously discussed, Software for Canon scanners are known to cause this problem. If you have a Canon scanner and disconnect it from the computer, then the messages

Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8718
Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717

or

Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8719

Tod - found this by putting that console message into Google:

"I found what programs generate each line:

N124U_ButtonManager makes:
Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8718

and N067U_ButtonManager makes:
Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717

You can find the ID of your scanner in the System Profiler, and stop these programs from launching automatically in the System Preferences (you should only launch the one that matches the ID of your scanner).
If you normally don't have your scanner connected, you may want to deactivate them both, and launch the correct one when you plug in your scanner (i know this is a bother, but what else can be done?)"

Worked like a charm. The Startup Items is under the Accounts pref pane.

Hi Dr. Smoke

I finally found the reason of my deep sleep issue!!! It was the button driver of my CanoScan N1240U USB Scanner.

After unplugging the device I also got this continuous "Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8718" and "Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717" messages.

What to do?
1: Go to "/Library/CFMSupport/"
2: localize the files "N067U_Button Manager" and "N124U_Button Manager"
3: trash them
4: reboot

For me it works fine. After hours inside discussions and months without automatic idle sleep my G5 deepsleeps by itself - Yippee!

Thanks for the hint.
