Sleep not working correctly

Recently I discovered that when I let my Mac enter Sleep by itself, as set in the Energy Preference, only the display is going to sleep. I have it set to put the entire Mac to sleep after 10 minutes. This is something that was working before.

I can however, put the entire Mac to sleep if I manually go to the Apple Menu, and use the Sleep, that is there. I rarely actually power the Mac off. I usually just put it to Sleep, or let it go to Sleep by itself.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to resolve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

My most recent software updates:
Apple: OS 10.3.9
recent Java Update
recent Security Update

HP: PhotoSmart Printer Drivers

My Mac is directly connected to a cable modem using ethernet(no router, etc..). The cable modem stays on all the time. I don't think that this has anything to do with it, because Sleep was working correctly with the same cable modem before. I thought that I should mention it, just in case.

Guess this is where I throw in my hat as well. My G4 (10.3.5) seemed to be working fine until a little while ago, when I discovered that however I put it to sleep, it would not wake up and required a power-button forced startup. The funny thing is, when it goes to sleep, the power light does not "breathe", just stays at the usual "power on" steady brightness. Reading through this thread, I've tried everything suggested: repairing permissions, using a cache cleaner, resetting NVRAM, resetting the PMU, replacing the power manager plist, even replacing the battery (following the suggested steps in order, for the various suggested fixes). No luck. Another clue may be that on my other Macs, if I do a power-button shutdown, the indicator light goes bright for about 5 seconds and then the computer shuts down. On this one, however, I can hold in the power button all I want - the light will go bright but the computer will not shut down until I release the button. Help?

I have the same problem as Sean described (but on a G5 2x2), and I think it's a bug (it was working before):
