Inputing Chinese Characters

Why did you want to know how WinXP handles these characters?

So that in telling Apple about can1 not producing 參 I could mention that the "other OS" does this right. But since Apple's Hanin does it right as well, the bug in TCIM pinyin is not so important I guess.

Hi, Tom. I'm trying to do something similar, but am learning Chinese with the simplified Chinese that my instructor in China is using.

I selected simplified Chinese from the input method, but I don't see pinyin as an input option anywhere. The three options appear to be ITABC, Wubi Xing and Wubi Hua.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, Tom. I was reading over that site. Chinese certainly seems a lot more complicated than Japanese. What am I getting myself into? 🙂

I was trying some of the ITABC input. It seems to work basically like ro-maji to hiragana to kanji conversion in Japanese, without the intermediate step of needing the hiragana. But it seems that ITABC input doesn't directly form pinyin characters with tonal marks, does it?

No. ITABC doesn't even support the use of tone numbers for input, much less marks. If you want to write pinyin itself, you have to use Roman input probably. Some alternative IM's are available I think. There is a good mailing list for all the issues here

I know this post is quite old. Did you ever find the Taipei font? I reinstalled and it disappeared and I have quite a bit of work I have done using it and it will be a major undertaking to switch fonts. Thank you!

Taipei is part of OS 9. You probably need to reinstall OS 9/Classic on your machine. Or if that is a problem send me an email (click on my name for the address).
