Inputing Chinese Characters

I'm studying Chinese and would like to input Chinese characters into my emails, etc.

Ideally, I'd like to type the pinyin for a character and have the OS generate the unicode for the correct Chinese traditional character.

How are you supposed to input Chinese characters?

Thanks.

Thanks, Tom. I was reading over that site. Chinese certainly seems a lot more complicated than Japanese. What am I getting myself into? 🙂

I was trying some of the ITABC input. It seems to work basically like ro-maji to hiragana to kanji conversion in Japanese, without the intermediate step of needing the hiragana. But it seems that ITABC input doesn't directly form pinyin characters with tonal marks, does it?

No. ITABC doesn't even support the use of tone numbers for input, much less marks. If you want to write pinyin itself, you have to use Roman input probably. Some alternative IM's are available I think. There is a good mailing list for all the issues here
