I know that I will have to buy a new 16 GB iPhone if I want one but how do I go activating it? Do I put the old sim in or keep the new one in it? When i activate with iTunes I choose the keep old number or whatever option right? Do I have to pay for an activation fee? Thanks for the help.
13.3" MacBook,
Mac OS X (10.5.1),
iPhone 4GB firmware 1.1.3
EDIT: My apologies these steps may not work. You may need to activate it with the new SIM choosing the option to "replace" an existing phone on your account.
odd I thought every iPhone was tied with the sim card imei number printed on the sim and on the back of the phone. So If I was to put mY old iPhone sim the imei numbers won't match.
Also any one no where to sell an iPhone other than ebay.
After placing the SIM card from your existing iPhone in the new iPhone, you will go through an abbreviated activation process with iTunes which takes seconds and when selling your iPhone, you can sell it with a new unactivated SIM card for the buyer.
You have received the same answer from me and from an Apple employee. The SIM card is not locked to a particular iPhone. I can use my iPhone's activated SIM card with my Razr 3x which is a carrier locked AT&T phone. Your activated iPhone's SIM card can be used with any carrier locked AT&T phone or with an unlocked GSM phone but not the other way around.
You will use your existing iPhone's SIM card with your new iPhone going through an abbreviated activation processs with iTunes and when selling your existing iPhone to someone else, you can include the new/unactivated SIM card included with your new iPhone. The buyer will use the new/unactivated SIM card to activate their iPhone with AT&T.
My I bought a new iPhone and I put my old iPhones sim in the new phone to activate it, it would not activate till I put the new iPhone sim back into it even though I was transferring my old iPhones number to the new iPhone. The advice given here in this thread may or may not work. You may or may not need the sim in the new iPhone to activate using your old phones number.
I just came from the ATT store where I fully intended to buy the new 16G iPhone (I have had an 8GB iPhone since day one and have loved it, though I think ATT isn't the best service provider). However, when the sales agent explained that I would have to re-up for another 2-year committment from ATT, I decided not to buy the new phone -- at least at this time. The sales agent said that my original 2-year plan would end the day I activated the new phone and a new 2-year plan would be initiated! I really like the iPhone as a device, but the marriage between ATT and Apple has been awful. So, those of us who bought the original devices either have to stay with the other technology OR dive into another 2-year plan. That's bad.
Has anyone else received the same information, or was I being mislead? Thanks!
If that is the case then that really blows. I was considering getting the 16GB as I don't have 3G coverage in my area. I just assumed that it would be as though my iphone was replaced. I had my first one replaced soon after I got it and they just gave me a new one and it didn't extend my plan when I activated that one with the old sim card.
i have it all synced up and i transfered all the stuff over including the number.
i have still yet to call ATT to see if everything looks ok on their end.
Phone works great no bumps like my old one.
Jus to let you know the new iPhone has arounf 192 mb of stuff in the 'Other' category.
I am soo happy. Im the first one to get one from my ATT store. and im 16 lol
Also when you activate, keep the new SIM in. Thats what Apple told me over the phone. Click the Existing Customer tab thing. if you have added texts like me select the right one. and in the end it should say that they changed the data plan on your account. it didnt mine it stayed the same and i got zero more text messages lol so basically everything stays the same.
Also you basically sign a new two year agreement but uts not that bad. its only been a couple of months since i signed the other one.
sorry to have two threads up.. forgot about this one
