16 GB iPhone

I know that I will have to buy a new 16 GB iPhone if I want one but how do I go activating it? Do I put the old sim in or keep the new one in it? When i activate with iTunes I choose the keep old number or whatever option right? Do I have to pay for an activation fee? Thanks for the help.

Coolbird,

As a point of clarification. It can't be changed to another account, but it can have the number changed.

For example if you requested a different phone number, or were to port a number from another carrier 6 months after you got the iPhone, the number would change.

You can't move the SIM to somebody else's account though.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

I have to say that while I thoroughly enjoy my iPhone, the fact that in only 6 months since i purchased my 8gb model, now a 16gb model is out with no consideration for those who jumped in with both feet! I truly feel that Apple should show some allegiance to those of us who helped them make their NUMBERS they posted for iPhone sales, put up with nagging problems and more. I personally had to have my phone replaced 3x, the last of which was 2 days before the announced the 16gb iPhone. The least they could do is offer some sort of DECENT discount and trade-in of the 8GB model, they would certainly sell many of them through the Refurb channel!

Sorry, but it was your choice to jump in with both feet with a new, first generation product - as it was my choice, so Apple doesn't owe you, me, or anyone else that made the same choice diddly squat in this regard.

Did Motorola do this with the first generation Razr, or RIM with the first generation Blackberry, or any cell phone manufacturer with any first generation product or with any of their products whatsoever? I think not.

Question: What exactly is the difference between the 8GB and 16GB other than the memory? I've had my 8GB since January. Do you really think it is worth it to purchase the new one and sign another new 2-yr contract. I bet there will be another one coming out before the end of the year. I just did the software update on mine and I am happy with it. I do download a lot of Podcasts and music and audiobooks though.

Okay, I have finished the process...

I tried to activate my 8GB iPhone for my wife... no joy. I tried the hard reset and still no love. 😟

I tried to put in the SIM card of my wife's current Razr and got a message from iTunes saying that it did match the account. I did not try a hard reset at that point and I have a feeling that it would have worked had I tried.

So, I drove down to the AT&T store and told them my story. They said that it should work and that my wife should not use a new SIM card. One of the clerks said he just helped someone who had the same scenario as me and there was no new SIM card needed (the husband and side were on separate AT&T accounts).

Anyway, they gave me a new SIM card with no hassle. In fact, I was in and out of there in less than 5 minutes. The SIM card was no charge.

I got home and put the new SIM card in and got the same message as when I tried to use my wife's old SIM card. I did a hard reset at that point and it then worked.

So, it wasn't smooth sailing, but it wasn't an awful process either. Except for the drive for the new SIM card, it all took place on my own computer and not at an AT&T store. It was not an unpleasant experience. Apple and AT&T need to make sure they document the procedure before they launch new products, but I have spent much more time and frustration at both Cingular and Verizon stores for MUCH less complex requests.
