Application Spotlight quit unexpectedly

Yes, the computer is brand new. I believe it is the newest version?
I began to install the "Mac OS X" software that came with it;
I then realized I did not have enough time for that, and then quit.
That's when it began.
I give no information because i do not KNOW.

Hi Many thanks for your clear instructions, however I am still running into problems.

I had to do it through the terminal using the single user mode. at the end of it I was left with the message >>
update dyld_sharedcache failed: can't create temp file /Volumes/Macintosh HD/var/db/dyld/dyld shared_cachei386.tmp14, errnor=30

When booting and after entering the password, it still hangs I no longer see the message spotlight has unexpectantly quit but now also PenTablet has unexpectantly quit. This does not always happen yet nonetheless the system hangs.

Further to this I am getting the Spotlight application has unexpectantly quit and at the same time PenTabletDriver has unexpectantly quit. And as a result will still not boot.

Also for your information I am running the File Vault and the PenTabletDriver is a preferences file for the Wacom Tablet. I have been attempting to delete this file in the hope that it gets further sadly I am not sure how to go about this with it being in the File Vault

i too have this problem...brand new macbook, first time mac user..i thought this is why i bought a mac....noone of these error messages

currently im experiencing this problem now. can't do anything. but i inserted the DVD disk 1, and run disk utility to repair permissions from there. still running and hope it works ... after...

i did not realize you only instal that if something is wrong, whoops.
it's ok though,
i have a friend who is going to let me clone theirs.
