Can't import from Sony DCR-SR200 camcorder

Just upgraded to iMovie 08 as I was told my Sony DCR-SR200 was supported at the Apple Store. Also see it listed as a supported camcorder on Apple's support site. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

The HDD of the camera comes up on the desktop as a disk drive but iMovie says a it does not detect a connected camcorder. I can even try to manually import the files and again, iMovie see the HDD as a mounted disk but the MPEG-2 file are grayed out and can't be imported -- even though the dialog box states that it supports MPEG-2 files. I've tried various combinations of when I connect the camera -- before I start iMovie, after, etc but nothing seems to work.

I'm running a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 with Mac OS 10.4.11. Using USB to connect the camcorder.

I feel like a total idiot, but I am unable to get imovie08 to bring up thumbnails from my SR200. I followed all your instructions and I get as far as being able to see the camera as a hard drive in finder (and if I open iphoto, I can easily upload my photos). The access light flashes until the hard drive is shown. Then, I open imovie and wait. And wait. And wait. Nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

If I try and import the movies myself, I can click on the hard drive of the camera, but the .mpg files are not accessible (they are greyed out).

Help me before I crack up!

Brand new iMac owner and new to Mac. Found this thread before buying the iMac. Attempting to get my video from sr200 following the instructions here. My camera is full from a 6 week vacation, but I have had the rainbow ball going on the screen in iMovie for over an hour now. Any suggestions. What I noticed was the red light on for quite some time and then when it went off I opened iMovie. Then the light started flashing again when the light went off again the rainbow balls started in iMovie. All I can think is with over 1k files on a full camera this may just take an extra long time. I would love one of you having success to write a detailed step by step of exactly what you do. I took my camera into the store before getting the camera (they couldn't get it to work - called Apple and after they questioned their expert I was told the 100 and 300 work, but not the 200. I know it has worked for several of you and am determined not to have to use streamclip as a work around.

Would love a step by step of what you do when getting film clips from the DCR-SR200 into iMovie. Just switched to iMac and am liking except for this issue. When connecting using the USB the camera opens with a screen showing computer - do you just select that and wait for the clips to show in iMovie? I tried this the other day and iMovie hung up for about 2 hours til I force quit.
Thanks in advance
