Can't install Canon EOS Digital Solution disk

Hi,

Have got a problem installing 'EOS digital solution disk' which came with my Canon EOS 400D digital SLR camera. Here is a description of what happens:

I click on 'CANON EOS Digital Installer' icon as instructed. First something called 'MasterInstaller' launches, and I select 'Europe' then 'UK' when prompted. The main menu appears again and I select 'Install', then 'Next' then 'Easy Install'.

I 'Agree' the terms, then hit 'Next' in Starting Installation window.

At this point, 'Installer' launches and a window appears with the text "Preparing to install ImageBrowser" (with a blue striped barber pole type line beneath) but nothing happens. The blue stripes do not 'move' as is normally the case when something is working. It just locks up, and usually the Mac beachball of death will spin. I've tried leaving it ages to sort itself out, but nothing changes.

When I go into the 'Force Quit' option from the pull down menu in Finder, (as everything is stuck) the 'Installer' and 'MasterInstaller' are usually highlighted in red, I guess meaning they've either crashed or got lost. Sometimes the Finder joins in too (being highlighted in red).

I'm not running any other applications, and I've tried doing a Custom Install, (instead of 'Easy') and choosing only 1 application at a time, and disconnected my external drive but to no avail.

I tried emailing Canon, but they have just suggested I try loading it onto another Mac but I don't have one or access to one either.

Some help would be appreciated.

P.S. Gave disk to my partner to try on his PC and he said it loaded ok, so I assume it's not a faulty disk.

Ok. New can of worms here....

The Diskwarrior forged ahead through step 5 and finally finished its task late last night (hurray!) and proudly announced:

'sucessfully built a new optimized directory named "Mac Hard Disk". The new directory is ready to replace the original directory.'

I looked at the report, (didn't mean anything to me) then, being curious, clicked the 'details' box on the bottom left (still none the wiser!) then thought I'd better click on 'Preview' as recommended ............... and now the beachball of death has returned. My mouse's arrow turned into the ball and I couldn't click on or select anything.

I decided to leave it but it's still hanging there, just the same, 12 hours later.

What happens now? If I kill it via the power button will it lose the 'new optimized directory' and I have to re-run DW?

Any advice welcome!

Thanks,
Cath

I decided to restart via power button, (had no other option) then re-ran the DW and reinstalled the repaired directory. I didn't bother looking at the 'details' of repair this time, just saved the repair report to my desktop when prompted (212 pages... is that excessive?).

I was then able to fully install the EOS Solutions, no problems and all running smoothly.

What an amazing utility DW is!

My eMac is now very happy with itself. I might reward it after all with a Tiger upgrade.

So a big thank you to you both, Hans & Dale, for encouraging me not to lose hope, and pointing me in the right direction.

Hopefully I won't be back for a quite a while.....

Best regards,
Cath

Yes, it is awesome. I have never had an issue it could not repair.

If you decide to get Tiger, you can upgrade DiskWarrior at Alsofts site to the Tiger/Leopard version for half the cost of a new disk. Don't toss your copy; you'll need it's serial number for this upgrade and further upgrades in the future.

You are welcome! I'm so glad Hans was able to help you during the times I was unavailable. That's what's so great about the helpers here.

We'll all be glad to help next time you need something. By the way, I run Diskwarrior once a month to keep my directory in shape. It always finds something to fix; mostly small items. I say catch them before they become big ones!

That sounds atypically large! Chances are, 60% of it is very minor stuff, 39% were moderate errors that accumulated since the OS was installed, and 1% of it had to do with the actual serious problem that prevented your installation and confused Disk Utility.

It doesn't look all that impressive on the surface since the program has like 3 features, but one of those features is disk repair that is essentially unmatched by any other utility. Having it around is a good thing, so it's nice that you do have it around now for next time. Which may not be for a while.
