Toshiba Satellite Photo Download Problem

Hi,
I have been trying to get the photos I took with my iphone off of it for a long time with no success. I tried every different method I found on here and finally noticed that several other people with the same problem had the same computer:

Toshiba Satellite...

So I took my iphone and cable to work and pulled off the photos in about 30 seconds with the microsoft camera and scanner wizzard. No problem with the phone. I effing hate Toshiba.

Toshiba Satellite, Windows XP

King Bapho,
What makes you think you can solve a problem that has plagued so many people with three words? I guess my post wasn't clear. This is a controlled experiment with pretty obvious results...

I have two machines, one is a toshiba satellite with XP home, one is a Dell Optiplex with XP Pro. Neither one has photoshop elements. The system that works doesn't have itunes installed either. Many of the people who are unable to download pictures from their iphone to their computer also have toshiba satellites, so I checked if doing the same thing with the same software would work on a different machine. That is called control. If every element in a system is identical but one thing, and the result is different, you know the cause and effect relationship.

In this case the one thing that is different is the machine.

(One thing I was not able to control for here is XP Home vs. XP Pro. That could have something to do with the cause of this problem, but I think it is very unlikely as all the interaction up until the failure or success in downloading is identical.)

All of what I have observed is consistent with a noisy or otherwise defective USB. There are so many other problems with this machine it doesn't surprise me. (Next home computer is going to be a mac.)

I have not tried paying $60 for elements because unless it somehow has a better usb error correction scheme (which seems unlikely) it shouldn't solve any problems. I would be willing to do the experiment if anyone wants to send me a copy, and I would like to know if anyone has had failures using microsoft camera and scanner wizard that were solved with photoshop elements. I have several years experience debugging hardware problems and I know what I am doing, but I have been wrong before and I don't have access to a scope or a logic analyzer anymore.

Another thing I would like to try is plugging a usb to pcmcia converter into my pcmcia slot and seeing if that works. I'll post here if I try that, but for now I have a working solution.

It is my laptop, USB is the means of transportation.

Well obviously what has to happen here is go try the trial that comes with it to see if it is your acclaimed usb issue or not .

I mean isnt it better to know than not to know, as far as the toshiba satellite goes then why havent you tried reinstalling the operating system without the toshiba standard OEM operating system , some OEM is good , MDG ( Canadian company ) vs dell where there are countless known issues with iphone/dell machines and properties with not having updated drivers from the website .

I shall disregard anything you say till you try adobe photoshop elements, prove me wrong , ill eat my shorts 😉

Well, sometimes 1+1 does equal 2. All the dots are connected. You may begin eating your shorts.

With Elements I try to download photos and I get a yellow exclamation point box with the message:

Apple iPhone

Failed to obtain thumbnails from the device. The device is not connected or
is busy.

It is connected and it is not busy. I tried many times on each usb port. One time I actually saw the thumbnails of the photos on the phone, but then I got the message when I selected them for download. Another couple times it crashed. It just got stuck on the "connecting to device... please wait" screen, not a system crash, just a program crash.

If you would like to do some more tests I would be happy to sell you a shiny toshiba satellite laptop for them. This can be fascinating work...

In any case, Elements did not solve the problem so you can stop pushing it like your on commission. I hope you put on some clean shorts after your last post.
