Canon 40D Tether Support?

Anybody have a 40D working with the tether?
Mine just says busy on the camera display and won't let me take a photo.
My 20D DOES work (yay), the communication is set to normal, but there are no communication settings on the 40D...
Also it would be sweet if the tether could work with live view, but maybe that's asking a bit much right now.

Using my 20D (firmware 2.0.3) I connected the USB cable and turned the camera on. With communication set to normal the camera is fully functional and can take shots. In aperture 2, I just opened the tethered session and it will show the shots as I take them, the capture button also works on the computer. I've set my setting in the preferences to open no application when a camera is connected. If you have other software opening that might not let aperture control it. I've got a CF card in the camera but it does not record to it while tethered.

Unfortunately the 40D just displays "busy" in the top display and viewfinder whenever connected to a computer and won't do anything else.

I, too, am experiencing this problem while using Aperture 2.0 Trial. This is a 40D with the latest firmware (1.0.5). It stays on busy for a while unless I take out the CF card. I can start a tethered session but the "capture" button is greyed out and nothing happens upon shooting.

Maybe worth noting is I used to use a work-around folder action in combination with the EOS utility to tether shoot, download to a folder that had an embedded folder action to import the phone into Aperture. It was a time consuming work around and I'm hoping native tether support will work with this model camera.

Any other 40D users (or Canon users) get this to work?

I'm having the same problem with a Canon 10D.
When I set the camera's communication setting to "Normal" Aperture identifies the camera correctly, "Canon EOS 10D", however it doesn't import any of the pictures I take nor can it use the "capture" button, even tho its not grayed out. The camera is fully functional, it doesn't go into "busy"
When I set the camera to "PTP" aperture Identifies the camera as "Canon Digital Camera" and the camera goes on "busy". The "capture" button is grayed out in Aperture and I can't take pictures with the camera.

I use a Canon 40D and I'm also disappointed that it doesn't work in tethered mode. I sent an email to Canon requesting that they work on a software/firmware update that will open up the cameras for use with 3rd-party software tethering, specifically Apple Aperture. I would encourage everyone who is interested to send a request to Canon as well. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ContactCanonAct

Incidentally, I pulled out my Canon Digital Rebel XT (not XTi) and I can confirm that it DOES work in tethered mode with Aperture. Plug it in, start a tethered session, and shoot. No issues, no special configuring required on the camera.

Erik,

I appreciate the personalized response. I understand your reply
completely. With Aperture being an Apple product, there is no way anyone
could rightfully expect Canon to support it. However, as large
companies, I would imagine that Canon and Apple work together at some
level to ensure that hardware and software is compatible. The 20D and
the 30D both function as expected with Aperture 2.0, however the 40D is
not; there are many public discussions on various forums discussing this
problem.

It is my hope that you will pass this along to your product management
product so that they may begin conversations with Apple and supply them
with whatever missing components are needed to make this work.

For the record, I have previously tether shot using the EOS utility and
used a script to populate the downloaded images directly into Aperture.
With their latest version, my hope is that I can avoid this "round
robin" way of doing this.

Again, thank you. Please pass this along to the correct Canon
department. It is also my understanding that very similar messages have
been sent to Canon regarding this Aperture/40D/Tethering problem.

Thanks!

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a

Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We are sorry

to
hear that you are unable to shoot with your EOS 40D tethered to your
computer using Aperture 2.

Unfortunately, we are unable to support third party applications. We
recommend that you contact Apple (www.apple.com) for assistance with
their software.

If you would like assistance with shooting remotely, we recommend that

you try using the Canon software that was included with your camera.

We
will be happy to assist you with this if you install the software and
reply to this message listing the version of OS X you use.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we

I have a Canon 40D w/ firmware 1.03 and OSX 10.5.2 Aperture v2 on a 17" Macbook Pro 2.6 CD2.

I get the same thing as you "busy". If I select "Import" in Aperture, Aperture will let me import the images that are on the card in the camera. But the tethering just doesn't seem to work.

If I fire up the Canon EOS software I can get the live tethering. So I know it's no the laptop, the USB Cable, nor the Camera.

Yes, I realize the Camera is not running the latest firmware (1.0.5 I believe). But I've not had a reason to upgrade it, so I've not. Since you said the tethering with Aperture isn't working with your 1.05'd 40D I don't think my running of the older firmware is the problem.
