Some shadows on the display (iMac 24, white modell)

Hello,

I got some kind of shadows on the display of my white iMac 24'.
They seems to be "behind" the Mouse, maybe on the backlight level. Also it seems that the shadows grow :-/
They are right under the iSight.
As I use my Mac for photo processing it is very annoying.
Do I have to send my Mac to Apple for that or is this some kind of dust?

best regards,
Nihab

I have the aluminum 24 iMac and have the same problem. BTW I think this is a different problem than that described under the "screen burn/fuzz" thread. Mine started at the top (after about 5 months after buying) and looks almost like dust or a coffee stain on a piece of paper. Keeps getting bigger. Since I have the alum iMac I took the screen cover off with suction cups thinking it was dust between the actual screen and the screen cover but it wasn't. I was going to take the computer in to the Apple store this week but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or hopefully a solution.

I am having the same problems with my aluminum 24"iMac. Has there been any resolution to your problem? I have grayish streaks on my monitor and I too believed that it had to be accumulated dust behind the glossy panel. Now that I know that this is not the case, I am really frustrated. Is this a warranty issue?

Thanks

A Closer Look At The 24" Display Issue

The 24" display issue is surprising similar to the 20" issue, except that the gradient color change appears from left to right and mac photos. The 24" display also appears to suffer from backlight leakage, which apparently can occur from multiple directions.

Apple's Handling Of The Issue

Of course, the most important thing to both current and prospective 2007 iMac owners is getting this resolved. So far Apple has said nothing about the issues? Many iMac owners have reported being charged a 15% restocking fee when returning their defective iMacs, as some Apple retail managers apparently aren't acknowledging these problems as defects.

Many iMac owners are using terms like "class action suit" in discussion forums, but, thus far, none have taken the first step in initiating such proceedings. Many still hope that Apple will take the initiative and issue a recall of affected 20 and 24 inch iMacs. No one outside of Apple knows exactly how many 2007 iMacs are out there, but hundreds of thousands could have been produced.

Apple's fiscal year fourth-quarter earnings report shows sales of 817,000 desktops in the quarter ending September 29, 2007, which includes seven weeks of 2007 iMac sales. And, there are about an additional seven weeks (September 30 through the day of this writing) of desktop sales, including early holiday sales, not reflected in the above numbers. That's a lot of iMacs, and potentially a lot of two-way shipping fees and displays to replace.

According to Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, as of September 29, 2007, Apple had $15.4 billion in cash and no debt. Somehow, assuming the defects are real enough to affect use the of iMacs for the purposes they are purchased, I think they can afford to do the right thing no matter how many displays are affected.

Hello, Just to add to this discussion, I am experiencing the same streaking on my 24" aluminum.
I attempted the proposed suction cup remedy and sadly the monitor aberrations had nothing to do with the glass panel. In fact the streaking is in the LCD panel itself and not on the surface. I attempted to remove the streaks with microfiber, LCD cleaner and compressed air all to no avail. I have not experienced the gradient problems or the backlight issues but this streaking is a common problem as there are many threads concerning this issue. I will see what Apple has to say about this and I wonder how this will be addressed. What is the common turn around time if the display is replaced?

Thanks for listening

I own two imacs, one 20" and a 24" (both white models, late 2006, early 2007). First I had apple assistance to replace three times (3!!!) the display on the 20 incher, because of stains appearing in the left corners of the screen, now it's the turn of the 24", which displays stains in the upper central part of the screen. I don't know if it's only bad luck but I'm quite convinced that it has to do with the quality of the sealing in the imac displays (it's dirt sneaking inside the display, I guess). Fortunately I have apple care, so there will be no extra costs. But, it's incredible how this can happen so often. They should do something to enhance their quality control.
The problem is, I have an older imac (the "steel neck" type) and an ibook in the same room and they never had the same problems. Therefore it's a problem of the newer models, which I presume are made to lower quality standards regarding display protection or sealing or whatever. Besides, the room is not dusty (I live in a green neighborhood, and no one smokes). Apple should address this problem, which I found has emerged in the last time in the forums. Someone even tried to resolve it by disassembling the imac (which is a risky endeavor) and cleaning the inner surface of the display. Someone also thinks it has to do with overheating of some components inside the imac which cause material (glue or similar) left during assemby on the display to "burn" and get visible with time. The bottom line is: Apple quality is diminishing in general regarding hardware, maybe because they are trying to reduce manufacturing costs, and this is unacceptable.

I finally got a chance to get my display fixed. I took it to a authorized mac repair shop (not an apple store). The guy said he never saw anything like it but there must be some sort of breach into the LCD unit (apparently the LCD is supposed to be airtight and therefore no way anything can get in). Bottom line, he replaced the LCD (covered under my warranty) and everything is fine.
