No 5.1 surround in some HD rentals?

After upgrading my Apple TV firmware yesterday, I decided to christen it by renting one of the available HD titles. I chose "2010: The Year We Make Contact" in HD for the heck of it - perhaps in part as a personal tribute to the late Roy Scheider 🙂

Everything worked great, except that instead of getting a 5.1 soundtrack, my receiver only detected 2-channel stereo.

Now, this is not entirely unsurprising, given that "2010" is an older title, and as such, it may not have a 5.1 soundtrack, but I'd just like to know if anyone else can confirm that some HD rental content on iTunes comes sans-5.1. That is to say, I'd like to know if something is just not set correctly on my end that might be preventing the full audio from coming through intact to my receiver.

If it is the case that some iTunes HD movie rentals do not include 5.1 soundtracks, I wanted to submit the following feature request to Apple:

Please list the actual audio encoding ("5.1," "2.1," etc.) in the description for each title, just as you might find on the back of any DVD movie box!

Is that too much to ask?

Apple TV, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Firmware version 2.0

Interesting. I looked carefully at the description for "2010" and did not see any info re. the audio encoding. Are you saying that it's there?

I will simply reiterate that I think it would be useful if Apple could include this in the description blurb for each movie. If they're already doing this, I stand corrected.

IN any case, thanks for all who responded. It now seems clear that not all titles include 5.1 audio, which was my initial suspicion (although this doesn't mean that I don't still think they should detail this on a title-by-title basis).

*As re. the comment about titles before 1992 not having 5.1 soundtracks, this may be true of the original releases, but many have since been remastered with full surround.

I rented ratatoulie in HD and it didn't give me 5.1 either. which surprised me. Can anyone recommend a movie they know to be in 5.1 so that I can confirm my configuration ?

I find the HD moniker to be a term perverted by many providers. to me HD means 720p, 1080i, 1080 resolution video and 5.1 surround. hidef could be anything from upconverted video to just great video but only 2 channel sound. sigh....

Apple DOES display weather a movie is in Dolby Digital or not... However it is very small. On each movie's main information screen where you choose weather to watch a preview or rent it, under the section of text that is titled "Movie Details" at the bottom you will see a tiny DD logo right next to the tiny HD logo. If you don't see that tiny DD logo than it's NOT in 5.1 surround sound. A movie that does have it so you can see for yourself is Stardust. Hope this helps clear things up.

Out of curiosity...was the video quality OK? I took a look at the "2010" trailer a couple of weeks ago (about all I can do until movies turn up in the UK) and it looked like it had been digitized from film stock that had been kicked around the cutting room floor, it was so bad!

NHughes - Don't assume the quality of the previews will be the quality of the movies themselves... I was assuming that at first as well... the previews have VERY BAD quality... but once you rent the movie you'll be blown away... and yes I did rent 2010 and was amazed by how good it looked for such an old movie... I'm not sure why the previews have such low quality... maybe so they download quickly?

That's good to hear...thanks. I don't think it's the encoding that's the problem - it looks like the tape/film they took it from is rubbish. I wonder whether it's one of those situations where nobody bothered to archive the material properly and they ended up tracking down some old reels from a dumpster somewhere 😉

The whole point of a trailer is to make someone want to see the movie...with this trailer I wouldn't bother and I'd end up missing a pretty good film.
