No 5.1 surround in some HD rentals?
After upgrading my Apple TV firmware yesterday, I decided to christen it by renting one of the available HD titles. I chose "2010: The Year We Make Contact" in HD for the heck of it - perhaps in part as a personal tribute to the late Roy Scheider 🙂
Everything worked great, except that instead of getting a 5.1 soundtrack, my receiver only detected 2-channel stereo.
Now, this is not entirely unsurprising, given that "2010" is an older title, and as such, it may not have a 5.1 soundtrack, but I'd just like to know if anyone else can confirm that some HD rental content on iTunes comes sans-5.1. That is to say, I'd like to know if something is just not set correctly on my end that might be preventing the full audio from coming through intact to my receiver.
If it is the case that some iTunes HD movie rentals do not include 5.1 soundtracks, I wanted to submit the following feature request to Apple:
Please list the actual audio encoding ("5.1," "2.1," etc.) in the description for each title, just as you might find on the back of any DVD movie box!
Is that too much to ask?
