Color Picker on Mac

I just read that OS X includes a hex color picker. What's it called, and how do I access it? I don't see anything in the Apps folder that looks like a color picker. Thanks.

This article in MacWorld

mentions this:
"if you’re a fan of Mac OS X’s built-in color picker, [bla bla] is even better. [Bla] Color Picker works as a color-picker plugin; drag it to ~/Library/ColorPickers (for use in only your own account) or /Library/ColorPickers (to make it available to all users), and OS X’s color picker palette will magically gain an additional panel. Use one of the standard panels, or the color-picker palette’s Favorites area, to choose your color, and then [bla bla]"

What I want to do is try out hex colors while designing a site. Online hex color charts don't always work the way I want and a built-in color picker sounds pretty darn good.

What you talking about is in ■ Applications → Utilities → DigitalColor Meter ■

You might like QuickPicker better, though. I was actually just searching earlier for a widget that could offer an eyedropper function, but the best hex program I found was QuickPicker. QuickPicker copies a code like this: #000000. Apple's DigitalColor Meter records "#000000" with quotation marks too, which just doesn't work very well with Adobe's Creative Suite or many other programs.. so I'm not sure why it's made like that and can't be customized.

I did find a dashboard widget called Colourmod, which is a decent color picker (not eyedropper). Still, I know it will never be nearly as useful to me as Screenshot plus, the Kuler widget, and Pandora, which is the best ever use of a Webclip.

I know it's more than you asked for, but I thought I'd name some things that could be useful to you too.

Sorry everybody, but the "DigitalColor Meter" is not the Color Picker. Color Picker is the panel which comes up in a Cocoa application when you want to chose a colour. Try TextEdit for example - right click in a document and chose FONTS - SHOW COLORS. The then appearing panel is the OS X Color Picker.

The third tool there (the one with the three little coloured squares) has the popup option of "Web Safe Colors", which is possibly what you are looking for.

There are also 3rd party colour pickers, which you only need to drop into ~/Library/ColorPickers to be available in this Color Picker. Some of them are also HEX related. Just search any OS X software site for Colorpicker.

Hope this helps
