Sync Music/TV off AppleTV

Sync Music/TV off AppleTV

So we can now purchase TV Shows and Music from the AppleTV device. Does it die there or can we sync it off to our ipods and laptops?

Steps:
- sit on sofa and access appletv
- spend money in iTunes store
- purchase a song and a tv show
- grab ipod and do what to get that song/show transferred????

 MacBookPro  G4 Tower  iPod Nano  AppleTV, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

All purchased content (music, TV shows), get automatically synced to your Mac from where you can then sync them to your iPod.

You can also sync from your ATV manually by going to iTunes -> Files -> sync from my ATV, and then sync to your iPod.

I was looking at it last night and did not see that option inside ATV. Sounds like I need to dig a bit more in the menus.

This morning I did try opening iTunes on my MBP and resyncing with ATV, but none of the content I purchased last night transfered or is visible outside of ATV. It appears to be only from iTunes to ATV, not bi-directional.

I will look again tonight.

It is DEFINITELY bilateral. Indeed, there are a lot of people on this Forum that are annoyed that ATV syncs back and fills up their hard drive. Check your setting in iTunes, the syncing is managed out of iTunes, not ATV.

Does it only work in the "sync everything automatically" mode? I left mine in the manual mode where I control what is transferred. Perhaps that is why I did not see the ATV content in iTunes.

No, it works in manual mode, but obviously then will only sync what you tell it to.

Unfortunately, if you tell it to stop syncing something it used to sync, it erases it from the ATV. The interface still needs some work IMHO.

It is bilateral, but if the content is HD, it won't work. Only SD is moveable.

Something must have gone wrong because I have not been able to see content purchased on ATV on my laptop. I have sync'd, browsed... nothing.

What I did find was an option in iTunes to download purchased content... it noticed a TV show I purchased on ATV and started downloading it, then it sync'd with ATV and copied a second copy of it to my ATV. I now have two copies of the same show on my ATV. Looking at it from iTunes, it shows one copy.

I take it others have not experienced this behavior?

For music, make sure the box "sync" is ticked in iTunes, then regularly got to iTunes (not ATV) menu and File -> sync from my ATV.
