I just installed the latest iLife Support 8.2 and now Finder can launch, which means I can't see any of my desktop, etc. Just had another Graphics update today and when I tried to restart, it is cancelled by Finder (which is opening and closing in my Force Quit menu).
Any ideas how to get around this? It is happening on my Mac Pro (10.5.2)
Can you get Console app open? If so, check the CrashReporter logs and see if there is anything that it gripes about with the Finder.
This was also caused by third-party contextual menus in Tiger, but Leopard supposedly quarantines them in the More>submenu.
Since it is all users, check the /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ folder. Move anything in there to the Desktop and see if it stops crashing. A safe boot should prevent them from loading.
Click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the screen, and enter the word "Console". It will produce some search results in the menu. Select the Console application. When it launches, click on the "Show Log Files" button. In the list that appears, click on LOG FILES->~/Library/Logs->CrashReporter. In the list of crash logs that appears, select the last log with Finder in the name. Copy/paste its contents into a reply and post it up. With that info we might be able to figure out whats going on and possibly come up with a solution.
I spoke to Applecare on this and when we booted in safe mode, same problems (system wide) occurred. Also tried by repairing disk permissions. Came down to reinstalling and archiving. I couldn't (and still can't) find the Leopard disk, so might take the whole CPU in to Genius Bar and have them do it.
Some function called FFusionCodecComponentDispatch is crashing, which is not a System API. It is an API from a third party app/plugin/haxie. Do you have some app, haxie or plugin with "Fusion" in the name installed? If so, it is the culprit. Uninstall it and things should work again.
It appears that Perian is having a problem accessing a codec. Try disabling Perian and see what happens. I'm currently running the most recent version of Perian (1.1) with no problem.
