"Software Update could not expand the package correctly..."

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it on the search.
I've set my Software Update to check for updates every week. Unfortunately, I've been having trouble installing the newest update. At first I thought it was just the app, the Security Update 2008-001, but now I can't install anything without getting the error message alluded to in the title. Is there something wrong with my computer? Could I have accidentally deleted something that allows me to install updates? I could live without updating Quicktime or other stuff, but the Security and MacOSX updates are pretty important and I'd like to be able to install these.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! Any help would be appreciated greatly!

Hello, something is stopping you from updating and must be addressed. Try going to your Utilities folder>Disk Utilities>Repair permissions. This solves many issues.

Okay, I'm having the same problem again. Now I can't even install things from the Apple website, including security updates, etc. Software Update just says nothing, goes the the Installer App and when I get to the step of actually installing it, it just says "It Could Not Install Correctly". What could be causing this? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Mac OSX or is there a way of fixing this?

Sorry for all my questions... I'm not that great at fixing computers.

I think both of you must use the Archive and Install feature...

Yes, I am having the same problem. I have called several times and (so far) Technical support has not found a fix. We have tried 2 hours worth of things including reinstalling the OS, repairing disks, nothing. What is strange, I have seen several updates get installed fine and 1 of them won't install.

Is there any sort of explanation for what's happened here? My permissions are fine, my HD verifies without any problem whatsoever, but I cannot install software from Apple. Everybody else's software installs just fine.

I can handle a reasonably technical explanation; I'd just like to know what's going on before I wipe out a System that otherwise works just fine.

Basically boils down to two possibilities...

#1, part of the OS is munged or missing.

#2, A bad Preference file is preventing it.

Making a Brand new Admin User to test may narrow it down, but not for certain, as some User's prefs are kept together in the OSes Library.
