Make sure you are logged into an account with 'admin' privileges, then open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window:

ls -aln

Do not press return yet. Type a space, then drag your Iomega drive into the Terminal window, where it will expand to "/Volumes/<name of drive>". Now you can press return and post the output here.

The Iomega drive does not show up on the desktop

In the Finder, navigate to Finder > Preferences > General. Then make sure at least the top two boxes are ticked under "Show these items on the Desktop". Often an external drive will come under the category of "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" rather than "Hard disks" (my own external drive does).

You should then be able to do what I said previously. Otherwise we can do it the hard way !

I think I did the same thing with my Lacie FW drive. When I set it up a few hours ago, everything was fine. I could see the drive on my Desktop, I partitioned the drive in two, and could see them on the Desktop as well. Then I think I messed with the Ownership/Permissions setting for the drive (and partitions) so that only I could see it/them. Now I see nothing anywhere...except for Disk Utility. I can see the Drive, but the two partition icons look like pieces of paper with the top right corner folded over. What the **** have I done ???. I have copied some info from one of the partitions if that helps...

Welcome to Apple Discussions!!

I think the " Owners Enabled : No" is wrong. It corresponds to the "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" box in Finder's "Get Info" being checked.

two partition icons look like pieces of paper

These are generic icons. What does it say if you do a "Get Info" on these? If you are unable to get at this checkbox using the Finder, we may need to resort to Terminal to reset it. But try the Finder first.

Also, where exactly did you copy all that information from? Systems Profiler? I don't get all of that for my external FW disk (also a LaCie).

Hi Michael,

Yeah, I thought the Owners Enabled : No was a worry, but I don't know how to fix it.
The two partition icons (originally)looked the same as the drive icon, an orange coloured "hard drive" type icon with the FireWire symbol on top, so that's changed as well.
The printout I pasted in above is what I get when I "Get Info" on one of the partitions.

Duh! I'd forgotten about that "Info" button in Disk Utility! Very useful, since I've discovered one of my backup partitions doesn't have Owners Enabled either – but I can do something about this, since the partition shows up fine as another volume on the Desktop.

So, I wonder what you have done? This bit of your listing:

Used : 0 Bytes
Number of Files : 0
Number of Folders : 0

suggests you haven't done very much with this particular partition. Is this accurate? What about the other partitions? If they're the same, I'd be inclined to "start again" and re-partition/re-format. That might also get your orange icons back (that's the generic Firewire disk icon, BTW).

But if you think the drives should not be empty, post back and we can try to investigate further.

Mike,

I've just had a chat with a "Mac Guru" mate of mine...he's suggested that I just reformat and repartition the drive (no problem, no data on it), and has given me some advice about setting up permissions...suffice to say it's quite different to what I did : )
Thanks for your replies, I can see I'll be spending quite a bit of time here.
ps Do you know of any good Tiger "how-to" books ?.

Well, David Pogue's Mac OS X: The Missing Manual - Second Edition was pretty good if you're a newcomer (don't know what the latest version would be for Tiger – possibly Fourth Edition?)

Other than that, my best suggestion would be to visit a real bookstore and browse around. It depends very much on your background, interests, whether you're coming from traditional Mac OS, or from Windows, etc. There are plenty of books out there, some better value than others 😟

BTW, your mate's advice strikes me as the best way to go, as I hinted in my previous post. Good luck!

A follow-up to my panic attack from last night. Because I didn't have any data on my (new) drive, I reformatted and repartitioned the drive...left the Ownership/Permissions thing ALONE...and I am now out of my World Of Hurt.

Monfrair, I don't know if this will help you, maybe there is another way around the problem, but it seemed to be the easiest solution for me.

Best of luck...and thanks again Michael.
