Mac Air Remote Disk problem. HELP!!!

I'm brutally frustrated right now. Recently (obviously) purchased a MacAir. I am having a problem with the remote disk feature. I was able to migrate most of my information from the Mac desktop, but now, I am unable to access DVD's on the desktop. Networks are fine, the MacAir "sees" the other three computers on the wireless network, and I can log into them fine. I have enabled sharing and Remote Disk. The mounted Remote Disk in Finder on the MacAir shows the desktop, and the volume name of the DVD/CD. Then it brings an error message saying "the operation cannot be completed because the original item for "(DVD or CD volume name)" cannot be found" I've tried this with numerous applications I wanted to install from DVD, as well as data DVD's containing pdf's but no applications. Right now I want to install Parallels, but the MacAir won't deal with the CD with WinXP on it, creating the message above.

I'm obviously missing something here, but can't figure out what it is.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. The desktop is 2 GHZ Intel Imac running 10.4.11 The Mac Air is running 10.5.2

I spent an hour and a half with Applecare and apparently there is a bug with remote disk. I have the same problem, it doesn't work with either Vista or XP PCs. The best they could do is send me to the store so they can install the software for me.

Just got my MBA last night and experienced many of the same problems I've seen in these forums re: remote disc and wireless migration. My wireless network gives me internet downloads at speeds up to 350 kbs, but the migration crapped out repeatedly and got completely STUCK at 20 hours remaining. As I wanted to play with the new toy ASAP, I used an 80gb ipod as a usb HD instead and it worked like a charm.

Forget the wireless disc for now is what I say. I created dmg's of all my necessary installers and back ups -- drag and drop to ipod -- and I was done in 2 hours instead of 20 âš

Hope this helps somebody.

All the same problems here with a new MBA and an older 2 GHz MacBook - both running 10.5.2 . I finally had some success by disabling the Firewall (in System Prefs > Security > Firewall set to the first option: 'Allow all...'). That's not very safe IMHO but it may be better than nothing.

I notice that Leopard has apparently tried to enable disk sharing by adding ODSAgent to the specific programs list but this does not seem to help.

Incidentally, I have to do the same to establish a screen sharing connection though I can then set the Firewalls back to 'Allow only essential services'

When I click on Remote Disc absolutely nothing happens. I have 5 computers at home (non Mac) all on the same wireless network; and my MBA used to identify all of them. Now the Remote Disc is simply blank- little spinning circle appears in the bottom right corner for a few seconds and that's it.

Can anyone help please??

Your post seems not only arrogant but off the mark.

Remote Disc may work for lots of things, but protected media, like MS Office, cannot be loaded with it. That is its primary function. I don't need Remote Disc to transfer unprotected media that I can transfer via flash drive, usb HDD, etc. I need Remote Disc because I don't have a DVD drive and I can't load software that's on a protected DVD unless I buy an external drive or unless Remote Disc works as advertised.

I just migrated from XP because I had such an excruciating experience with Vista. I love Mac -- have since college 15 years ago, but this is the sort of thing I thought I left behind.

I have to go to the Apple Store to install software?

I have done everything suggested in this post and elsewhere and I've tried more than fifty times to get this to work. This is not why I made the jump to Mac.

Hi Guys

I replied to this problem on another forum message and it has worked for others as well. Though it may appear at first to be your MBA that is having a problem with remote disk facility, it probably isn't. I've investigated it and it appears to be down to the firewall on the other computer.

I have a Mac Book Air and a IMAC

I resolved the problem by going into the settings on my IMAC
System preference
Sharing
Firewall
Then you'll see Firewall option in the top left.
Press stop and then go into the advance option and turn the other 3 options off as well.
Make sure "ask me before allowing others to assess..." is ticked on in services and then
Go back to the main screen and try again

Should now work - but remember to turn the firewall back on when your done.

Hi everyone,
I just received my MacBook Air and it is my first Apple. I have read through the threads on this forum and think that my question is similar but with a twist 🙂

Firstly (and pls don't laugh) I'm confused. I'm under the impression that the Mac OS Leopard blah blah is already installed (if not why all those icons along the bottom of the screen). If it is then why on earth when I put in one of the two grey cds into my PC in order to install the dvd/cd sharing function so as to install Iwork08 the computer prompts me to reinstall the Mac OS?

Secondly when I select the installed dvd/cd sharing function on my PC it asks for the Mac OS reinstalling cd.

Thirdly when I did try to reinstall the Mac OS (I may as well)... I was following instructions on how to do it for the Mac: shut it down, press Option Alt and power button for list of disks, etc... Well, nothing happens, the computer starts and I get an icon of the hardisk and an empty drop menu. When I press continue and enter the details for my Airport (which I presume is my wireless internet network) nothing happens. There is a little circle that spins and spins.

Fourthly when I give up and just turn the MBA back on I can't figure out how to install Iwork08?

I hope all this does not sound too stupid. And I hope you can help. I am currently in Botswana and there are no genius bars where one can just drop in for advice 🙂

Thank you all!
