No AirPort card installed!??

Hi there to those nice enough to try and help me! Did an erase and install (and zero HD) two days ago on my 1st generation MBP and everything worked fine till today! My Airport suddenly seemed to freeze and I was unable to turn it off. I ended up re-starting to then be presented with the error saying no AirPort card installed! Its also not in the sytem profiler! I have read through the other topics on here already and someone suggested deleting the old airport and making a new one, but I can't make a new one as it is not in one of the services! Please help!!

Regards,
Pym, Owner Gamerswl.com

I'm very late to this party, but was having the same sudden "no airport card installed" problem on my Mini. I tried a variety of fixes -- running Disk Ultility, Command P-R reboot, deleting the SystemConfiguration folder in the library ... and nothing worked. Then I saw one person's post above about following instructions for resetting the SMC.

Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
  3. Wait fifteen seconds.
  4. Attach the computer's power cord.
  5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

A very simple solution, but I tried it and it worked the first time!

I'm currently having the same problem. I have tried reinstalling OS X. I have started up in safe mode. I have reset my SMC. I have reset my PRAM. I have preformed the extended hardware test and yet it found zero errors. I am currently using OSX 10.4.11.

My machine is a MacBook Pro 17in second generation.

having played around I think I found the solution, in another thread someone posted to delete tha appleairport2.kext file but as that wasnt there i tried moving/deleting the appleairport.kext instead and this worked! You can find it in /system/library/extensions/ move it first then reboot (I got some fancy error about cache etc but its ok...I hope!)

I'm not going to say I have the "same problem" because it seems like there are a few variations of symptoms in regards to the noted Airport issues, ranging from the Airport Card working intermittently to complete failure, but yes, mine is the latter and it has been well documented here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2371147&tstart=0

My goal is to pinpoint exact solutions to exact problems with exaqct hardware/software configurations. (If that makes any sense). For instance, many people have reported an error of "No Airport Card Installed" while others have received "No information found" So while the problem is relatively the same (no Airport), the proposed solutions are indeed NOT as different symptoms are parallel to different causes.

At this point, I can only speak for myself being the owner of a 15" 2.16GHz MacBook Pro Core Duo with no Airport Card activity at all, running Snow Leopard and applying all the aforementioned fixes listed in this thread as well as replacing the card. Now, had I had this data from every user that has posted in this thread, I could probably pinpoint exactly who has what problem and how to fix them. From here on out, please post your complete system specs.

I had the same problem with my 13" Intel MBP. Oddly enough, i did the "Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve" section of the article (even though this is a Macbook) followed by going to System Preferences > Network and deleting the airport from the list. Then i restarted the computer again and it worked. I did run Disk Utility before i did the above steps for about 5 minutes (then stopped it) so i'm not sure if the restart process of the article fixed it or the breif time reparing disk permissiongs fixed it. At anyrate, im happy that this was easily fixed.

in response to the following question that was deleted along with my previous reply:

  • Thanks for your suggestion. In fact, I'm happy to download the Apple80211Monitor.bundle today and replaced IO80211Family.kext from the downloaded folder. After restart my Mac, Panic Kernel showing and however I force shutdown and turn it on again still Panic!!! It shown something like unable to access the platform.
  • What s'ld I do now? I wish to repair with SL Installer, but it's not with me now. Any better way to repair it? I did not empty trash yet, that means the original kext still in my trash.
  • Help!!!! :((

Restore your original IO80211Family.ktext, or you can find another copy of it just googling that name. When I downloaded the update it just prompted me to install and I followed the prompts to intall it, there was no need to perform extra steps messing with the 802.11 wireless settings. It worked like a charm for me once I got around to installing that update when nothing else would fix the missing airport card problem. I guess thats why Apple removed my post telling people how to fix it cause they want you to bring it into them and charge you obscene amounts of money to fix issues. I was proud to be a new memeber of the Apple family, now I'm pretty darn glad I purchased a broken macbook pro on the cheap and just fixed it myself so I didn't give Apple a dime of my money.

  • I am working on a MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008) that has lost its connection to AirPort Card (shows message "No AirPort Card installed") in the GUI when try to start AirPort.
  • AirPort used to work.
  • When booted off the network and using Apple Service Toolkit version 1.3.1 it shows the AirPort card is functioning with no errors.
  • Therefore, I am assuming it is "Software" problem, rather than "Hardware".
  • I did an archive install to Leopard 10.5.6, still an issue.
  • I am copying user data to backup drive and will reinstall the OS completely!

I had the same issue and called apple care (I have a macbook pro running os 10.5.2). They had me shut down the computer, remove the power cable and battery. I then had to hold down the power button for 5 seconds. I reinserted the battery and attached the power cord. I was instructed to hold down the command, option, p & r keys will pressing the power button. I had to keep the command, option, p & r keys pressed down until I heard three start-up chimes. After the computer booted I turned on my airport and it was working fine. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem, and this procedure solved it a couple times.

Although, in my case, the error is coming back every second week. I can't keep on patching the problem by resetting the PRAM.

Is there anyone from Apple actually reading those threads? It seems we're not the only folks with that issue, can we expect a decent/complete resolution of the issue by Apple in the near future?

Boot to safe mode by holding the Shift key on startup. Once booted, reboot the computer and test.

Reset SMC by shutting down, disconnecting battery and power cord and holding power button for 5 seconds while they are disconnected.

Boot to the install disc by holding the 'C' key while the computer boots (with install disc in the optical drive). Check for an Airport menu while booted to the install disc.

If it is not recognized while booted to the install disc, the Airport Card or logic board will need to be replaced.

If it is recognized while booted to the install disc and you can see available networks, you will need to reinstall the operating system.

I have done all those resets and it fixes it for a couple of days and then it comes back again. It seemed like it was fixed for a week and now it froze my computer 5 times today and about 5 random restarts. Every time the airport card seems to loose connection right before the freeze.

I read that Apple built the antenna into the MacBook Pro's hinge at the bottom of the display. I have also noticed that this issue occurs when I close the lid and when the computer re-awakens.
Has anyone tried not closing the lid over a long period of time to see if this overcomes the issue?

I have had this problem too on my MacBook with OS 10.5.2. The airport card worked for months. Sometime after I used the ethernet cable it stopped working (don't know if this is related). I tried the command-option-P-R solution and got one beep (not 3) and it did nothing. I also tried moving the AppleAirPort.kext out of the preference folder (advice from another thread) and that did not work either. Will try the JonnyCatlst suggestion once I locate my install disc.

This sounds like a widespread problem? Is Apple addressing this?

I have a imac bought new in April 2008 with leopard installed everything working great till I did the most recent update last night 10.5.4. Now my wireless says no Airport card installed. I have tried an archive and install -no help. I found this topic and though it seems everyone talking about laptops I tried shut down pulled power cord and held power button down for 5 secs and then tried the cmdopt+pr while holding power button (a rather clever manouver to say the least) I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and could only get the chime 2 times instead of 3. Anyhow --no help!! Still no airport card installed. In network settings there is the option to turn the airport card on --but it doesn't actually allow me to turn it on. Does anybody else have any ideas for me?? I'll be calling apple support in the morning but stuff like this just keeps me trying everything I can think of ... I'll post solution if I ever get one - -(trying to avoid complete re-install of operating system as opposed to the archive and install ..but may have no choice)
