Migration Not Working

Hi folks.

On impulse I bought a new 24 inch iMac today with OS 10.5 installed. It is replacing my old G4 running 10.3.9. I tried to use the migration utility during setup but it kept telling me that my G4 didn't have OSX installed and it could not move the files.

Is this a common issue and is there a workaround? Thanks.

Dual 2GHz G5 & D.A. G4 733MHz (wife has MacMini), Mac OS X (10.3.x), 23" Cinema Display, 19" Lacie Blue Display, Microtek 1800f & Epson 836XL scanner

You can migrate applications separately as well as user accounts. if you migrate the user account, then just be aware of what may not work or could cause a problem: incompatible startup items, login items, and contextual menu items are the prime ones that can cause a malfunction in the system.

By plug-ins I don't mean those that are within an application's folder. I mean those in the /Library/ or /Home/Library/ folder.

Ahh, I see, things are starting to become clearer. I won't bother migrating a User acct then, just my apps and files. Anything else (not yet covered) that I should be aware of?

Thanks again!

Update.

I swapped drive placement in my G4 and tried the migration again. This time it found the drive and started working. I thought I would have more control over what exactly was migrated but it did not give me many options. No matter. I made two attempts at migrating things over to my new iMac and it seemed to be working but about 2/3 of the way through I encountered an error message saying it could not move some of the files.

I cancelled the first time and clicked "okay" the second time and let it finish the process. It migrated a good portion of the HD contents except for my applications. Several folders will not let me access things (Photos, Music, Movies) stating that I do not have sufficent priveleges to do so. Whats this?!? It also did not move enough to create a second user acct., just a folder with my user name on it and all the files within.

So that wasn't too successful. The main reason I wanted to migrate was to bring over my apps intact.

Do you recommend I follow your guidelines for file transfer as you laid it out in your first post Kappy? How do I gain priveleges to access the folders that are current locking me out? 😟

Thanks.

As said previously you should reinstall your third-party applications rather than migrate them.

Any thoughts about how to do that with QuarkXPress 6.5?
As I remember, I had a hard enough time installing it the first time around, and it check online to make sure you are not installing it on a new machine.

Kappy, you wrote:

"4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac..."

Okay, I tried doing that and I kept getting error messages. Some files would transfer, others wouldn't. Sometimes after repeat attemps some would, but others wouldn't after many attempts. I checked the permissions for these files and they were all full read/write.

Any ideas what the problem may be?
