iPhone Camera not saving pictures

Everything looks like it's working, I aim at what I want, click the shutter button. It makes the clicking noise and acts like it's saving the image. But when you go to look at the image there is an empty box like there should be a picture, but nothing is in it. When syncing, iPhoto shows no photos on the iPhone.

I did a hard reset holding down both buttons until the Apple logo appears, no change in behavior. I did a restore in iTunes, no change in behavior.

Any other suggestions?

I was having the same problem after I deleted all my previously sync'd photos using ImageCapture.

This solved the issue:

http://my-iphone-blog.blogspot.com/2008/04/my-iphone-ran-outa-film-fix.html

1. Make sure your phone has been synchronized in the version of iTunes you are using.
2. Restore your phone. (in itunes in the summary tab click the restore button)
3. After JUST the phone settings are restored, DO NOT restore your personal information from a back-up. It will prompt you for this, don't close this screen just hold off on it for now. Disconnect the iPhone and take a photo. The photo should now appear in the camera roll, as usual.
4. Reconnect the phone and import the photo into iPhoto; do NOT delete it from the iPhone. (after importing it choose "keep originals")
5. NOW go back to itunes and restore your personal information from a back-up.

Now your iphone will have everything on it, and picture taking works again.

Thanks to my twitter friend @KinfolkinAZ for pointing this out so quickly

Well, I tried the permissions thing, and the XML thing but they both did not work for me. I was in no mood for a restore from/not from backup and did not want to reset my data and mess with the backup folder... So after messing around, this is what worked for me:
- SSH/MobileFinder to Media/DCIM/ folder;
- there is an invisible folder named ".misc" (if your using MobileFinder, make sure to turn on "invisible files" in the settings;
- Delete this folder which contains the preference file for the camera and the poster picture for the camera's album thumbnail;

That's it. Hope this helps some of you.

I have to say, I'm grateful for the more simplistic approach you suggested, Scott. I was a little leary of delving into the "shell" and making changes, and as it turns out your solution worked wonders for me. My wife's phone is back to normal, though I had 4 such files on our HD. I deleted them all. Funny to note that my phone never had the issue, and chugged along just fine through all the updates since last September.

Thanks again!

I just had the same "not saving new photos" problem. I did 2 resets w/ restore and the problem persisted. I went into my local Apple Store hoping that they would give me a new one (hehe), but we did a reset in the store and NO restore, and the functionality came back. So, I had to rebuild all my settings and widgets from scratch, but now I have a functioning camera again. 🙂

I don't know about the recent post about dcim files or even know where to change the settings with those lame *** directions . I restored my phone to original settings , took a pic and it saved it finally so I downloaded it to imac and then put all my stuff back on it . I did lose my web apps , notes , etc . I don't keep anything on it that can't be replaced anyway .
Thanx TIM

I did this and it seems to be working so thank you. However...I have a sinking suspicion that it may happen again and I'm wonder how to prevent it. Mine went south after I re-synced my photos in iphoto and selected the "delete after syncing option." I had over 1000. It didn't happen in conjunction with any updates. Thanks for the fix. I think that if it happens again, however, I'm going to have to go into the Mac store and stomp my little foot for a new phone.

OK... this is obviously a known issue.

I am now in Angel Falls in Veneuzela. Its beautiful. My camera has done exactly what has been descibed in this discussion, just as I started my first excursion.

There are no disposable cameras to purchase here.

This trip has cost me $1600 for 2 days. Nevermind the flight to caracas, which I never would have done, if i did not want to see Angel Falls.

Apple, I will see you in court!

If you got a Mac this is the solution that absolutely work I followed this and it worked I deleted the photos it still work. I believe this particular file is corrupted. My advice is to look the same directory then look at the file that begins with f1b43d the date modified I believe is that day you Updated it like today. I did delete and it restored it with pictures I took then I deleted the pictures then resync to make sure itwas still working fine and it was. Like I said this is the best solution for Mac Users,
