keyboard not recording on GB

BEFORE i bought my new iMac (Intel), the MacGenuis (a "personal shopper"), who was also a music student at Berkeley College of Music, told me i could download a driver from Casio that would make my Casio keyboard work on my iMac. now you tell me my Casio will never work on my iMac vie USB cable? ARGHH!!!!!!!!!! that's why i bought an iMac -- so i could import sound from my Casio into GarageBand and edit it. the MacGenius's at the Apple Store disagree -- they tell me i can get it to work. possibly you are incorrect?

i just changed the Preferences/Audio settings, to "Built-in input/output," and it still did not work. it also said "0 Midi devices detected."

HOLY COW ... my son (8 years old) just got it to work!!! i don't know what he did, but the USB is importing perfect sound from the Casio keyboard.

this is what my son did, to get the USB cable to work on our casio so he could import perfect sound for GB.

we hooked up the USB cable from the casio to the iMac. he clicked the "+" sign in the bottom left corner of the main page for GB. he selected "software instrument" from the dialog box. then he clicked the blue "i" button in the bottom right corner of the page to get a "track info" menu which appeared on the right. he selected an instrument on the left side, and then he chose another instrument on the right side. then he pressed the red record button and started playing the casio. when he was done, he clicked the record button again to stop the recording. to play it back, he hit "z" to go back to the beginning, and then he clicked on the play arrow to play it back.

i did download a driver (Casio USB MIDI Driver 10.4.dmg.zip) but i was not able to install it .... so i don't think the driver had anything to do with it working -- i plan to delete the drivers from my computer soon.

let me know if it works for you. our casio privia PX-555R is no more than 2 years old.

be sure to use the square USB port on the casio, and not the round ports. when you turn the casio on, it will say something like "USB port detected."

i went to guitar center (the store that sold me the casio privia), and they told me the casio privia has a built in MIDI, so i only needed to use a USB cable to get it to record on GB. they said i didn't need any drivers either. they were right. we got it to work, once we figured out which buttons to hit in GB.

i gave bad advice before .... i said the casio driver was not necessary for newer casio keyboards. this was not the case. we just exchanged our 20" iMac for a 24" iMac, and when i got home and tried to get the casio keyboard to work with the new Imac and GB ... it did not work until i downloaded and installed this driver from casio.

it says the file is "depracated" whatever that means. but it works fine for us -- i could not find a better file.

on GB, be sure to click the "+" sign, and then click on "software instruments." i left inputs and outputs at "system setting."
