Blank DVD and CDs won't mount or show in Finder

Recently my g5 has begun not showing when I insert blank media into my optical drive. However when I put in a blank CD or DVD, it will still ask me what I want to do with the blank CD or DVD. When I tell it to open Disk Utility or iTunes, then it will open those applications, but when I ask it to open Finder, nothing happens, and the disk never mounts on my desktop.

I'd call tech support but I'm out of the house till after 6 till Friday and I'd REALLY like to have some idea on how to fix this before than.

In Tiger you create a New Burn Folder from the Finder's File menu. Name the folder, drag files (they're aliases, but the real files will be burned) and you should be able to burn from the Finder.

Actually I did make a burn folder (sorry I forgot to mention) and when I tried to burn the file it said that I had to insert a DVD or Cd that had at least Zero KB.

Basically, it didn't register that there was a disk inserted in the drive.

Hi all,

I am facing the same problem. I am having eMac with 70GB HD and having 35 GB free disc space. My eMac has DVD- Write options as -R,-RW, +R, +RW.

After installing Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) I am not able to burn any DVD's.

When I insert the blank DVD it opens the Disk Utility (no way I can change to finder) and when I select Burn button from the folder it displays message "This disc will be burned with the contents of "Burn Folder.fpbf". You will need a disc with a capacity of at least 4.29GB."

Can any body please help or will I have to format and get back to OS 10.3

Dear Electriclite

I have identical problem with g4 imac. CD does not mount. I have been able to burn stuff by:
1. Create burn folder in File in Finder
2. Click Burn at the same time as putting disc in.
3. If I am a few seconds too late or too early then the Mac does not recognise the CD and I have to eject and repeat. About one million miles from drag"n"drop.

Apple need to fix this. If I wanted PC type hassle I would have bought one.

Yeah, I figured that one out 2 days ago myself, out of sheer desperation... or frustration.

I'm thinking about just booting from the installation CD at this point.

I'm having the same problem except that it happens with blank dmg files as well as blank dvds and cds. When ever I try to mount a blank dmg file it mounts and then unmounts immediatley after. This is starting to frustrate me becuase i am trying to build a boot cd. Someone must know whats going on here. Aren't there any Mac OS X official people who can help out? I looked at the firmwire stuff and it does not seem to affect my system at all.

I agree... If I had wanted to insert a blank CD and NOT have it show up, I would use Windows... I don't LIKE burn folders... or at least I want the blank CD to SHOW UP ON THE DESKTOP! This is NOT an improvement! The only option in System>Preferences>CDs & DVDs is "OPEN FINDER"... what about "MOUNT"...

It has taken me 15 minutes of screwing around just to copy files from iPhoto...

My problem is that my laptop with not recognize some blank DVDs but will recognize others. Staples brand and the Apple ones burn fine, others, like ones from Sony and Memorex are spit out after spinning for about 30 seconds. The problem must be in my Superdrive because the disks that my Mac spits out will mount on other 17" Powerbooks and ibooks.
