Question

Can I make a widget stay on the desktop? copy from a sticky?

Hello to all,
New to Tiger and loving it. I'd like to know if it is possible to have a widget stay on the desktop while returning to work on the desktop? Also, can I copy and past from, for example, the sticky notes or the translator onto a document?
I have looked at all the info about Dashboard and don't see this addressed.

If you want a temporary solution (that works until you bring up dashboard again), grab a widget off the widget "shelf" (don't let go of it) and press F12. Now, drop it on the desktop.

If you want a permanent solution, you do this using the Dev Mode Trick or by using Amnesty Widget Browser, depending on how much control you want over the widgets on your desktop.

Either method you choose, you should be able to copy and paste from widgets into other documents.

Hey thanks.....the F 12 trick works well enough for me....but I did try to, for instance, put a sticky note on the desktop and then copy and paste, but it would not copy or paste when I highlighted it.....the copy and past words stayed grey in the Finder: Edit mode....any other suggestions?

Laury,

Copy and paste works in the Sticky notes widget works for me (I command-a to select all and then select-c to copy, then paste in any other application with command-v). Not sure why you're having trouble. Perhaps you should trash the Sticky notes widget preferences?

Does anyone have a problem with the iTunes widget that when they put it on the Desktop it never updates? It claims that 'iTunes is not open' in the info portion of the widget.

However, as soon as I double-tap F12 (show then hide widgets), it works but now (if you noticed my double-tap) it's not on the Desktop any longer.

Is this just a Widget bug?

For most of these things, you don't need to use the widget.. There is a Stickies application which you can use for notes on the desktop.
If you minimize iTunes (green button), you have basically the same thing as the iTunes widget.
