Mr.Postman

Can anyone tell me how to disable the Mr.Postman? I believe that it was installed to enable hotmail on a mac book pro, our server does not support Safari, so we use firefox. Every time we log on or out we get a error message that says "unable to start POP server on 11110"The address bar says org.mrbook.mrpostman.MrPostman. We have to quit that before we use firefox. If we don't turn off Mr Postman, we cant log off. This is a real problem. It only happens on one account also. Thank you in advance for your help.

Uninstalling Software: The Basics

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.

Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.

Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.

Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.

If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.

There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning

Look for them at www.versiontracker.com or www.mackupdate.com.

Dear Kappy,
Thank you for your advise, the problems still exist, however I have seen many places I did not know were there...Thanks. There is an application, "mail to fetch jar" that can't be disabled, it is a cup of coffee with a pencil icon. org.mrbook.mrpostman.MrPostman still comes up with an error message "could not find POP server11114". I did find account preferences under my name and was able to hide Mail to fetch jar under "login". I downloaded appzapper, but am afraid to start throwing anything away.
Once again, thanks for your expert help here.

The "jar" means it's a Java program. If you can't remove it that may be because it's still running. Open Activity Monitor, set the Processes drop down menu to All Processes. See if there are any entries in the list of a process belonging to Mr. Postman. If so select it and Force Quit the process.

You may need to do a restart in order to get rid of everything after you've located the main part of the software that launches at startup. This could be a startupitem, a login item, or a launchdaemon. Look for them in the /Library/StartupItems/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ folders. Login items are controlled through the Accounts preferences.

I should re-mention that if Mr. Postman has an uninstaller you should use it to properly remove the software.
