Mac OS 10.4.1 Tiger incompatible with SCSI external drive

If anyone out there can help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it (please bear with me, for this is the first time I am posting to this discussion board).
I am having a problem with an external Syquest EZ135 drive that I have connected to a used G4 that I recently purchased from an Apple authorized dealer (If you need the computer specs, they are as follows: G4, 933 MHz, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB hard drive). The computer came with OS X 10.2.6 and OS 9.2.2 (Classic) installed. I purchased an Adaptec SCSI card from the dealer (who installed the card, and knew that I intended to upgrade to OS X 10.4 –but probably was not aware of any problems), as the Syquest drive required a SCSI connection.
Everything was working fine, until I decided to upgrade to OS X 10.4. After installation, I connected the Syquest drive via the SCSI cable to the G4, but on startup, a screen came up (what the Apple technician I later talked to said was a "kernel panic"), telling me to restart the computer by pressing and holding the button on the G4, or the restart button. After trying different things to see what the problem was, I found that the G4 would recognize the SCSI drive on startup (most of the time) when an EZ disk was inserted before startup and the EZ drive was turned on –but, if there was no EZ disk inserted before startup and the EZ drive was turned on, it would go into kernel panic. And, even if it did recognize the disk if I started up with an EZ disk inserted and the EZ drive on, the G4 would not recognize any other EZ disks –only the first disk on startup (meaning that I have to restart the computer every time I want to change to a different EZ disk).
I called the dealer (from whom I purchased the computer), who suggested I search for either a Syquest or third party driver online as this was most likely a driver issue –but the Syquest company is no longer in business (I don't know if they were bought over by another company) and I couldn't find any other SCSI drivers available (I should add that I did not have to install any driver(s) for the EZ drive with OS X 10.2.6 –I just plugged it in and started it up, and everything worked fine). I tried a SCSI probe utility (pre OS 9 version) that didn't work at all, I then called Apple to speak to an Apple technician (on two occasions), and was told to search for drivers, try upgrading to 10.4.1 (which didn't work –see below), or try partitioning the drive (so that I could run OS X 10.2.6 on one part, and OS X 10.4 on the other –I tried this, but didn't like having to start in OS X 10.4 on the first partition, restart the computer on the second partition in OS X 10.2.6 when I wanted to insert an EZ disk, copy the files to the first partition, and then restart in OS X 10.4 on the first partition again!) I then read on the Apple website that there was an update to OS X 10.4.1, and that some third party issues were said to be resolved with this update. I then upgraded to OS X 10.4.1, hoping that the Syquest drive would work with the computer, but there was no change at all –I still had the same problem. (Also, after starting up with the EZ drive and disk inserted (and it was recognized), I later during the same session on my computer, received a kernel panic during typing this e-mail, and had to reboot.)
Is there any way that I can resolve this problem, so that I don't have to restart the computer every time that I want to insert a new EZ disk? I have a lot of files on EZ disks, and family members that still use these disks also –otherwise, I would not be so concerned (and I do not want to have to buy a different external drive! ) Perhaps there is a driver that can resolve this issue, or perhaps a fix could be added to a later update of OS X 10.4. Maybe an item from the OS X 10.2.6 system folder could be put into the OS X 10.4.1 system folder (as I did an archive and install to save the the OS X 10.2.6 system folder in the previous system folder on the G4) –I really don't know. If anyone

There have been a few posts which suggest Adaptec cards are not always been the optimum choice since Panther and others were suggested, though that is scant consolation for you with one you just bought.

I would stick with the idea - involves a bit of work - add a second drive OR partition the boot drive and install two OSX versions - Tiger and 10.2.6 and boot into either partition/drive as needed. Ultimately it would make sense to get an external drive and copy all these EZ disks over and retire the drive.

I am having the same problem with a scsi zip drive. I get a kernel panic if I don't have a disc in the drive. If there is a disc in there, I am fine. (thanks for that idea!)

I really wanted to access my scanner (next on the chain) so now I can. Tomorrow I will move my scanner and see if I can remove the zip drive from the system and still access my scanner. Zip USB drives are cheap.

I am still curious if there is a fix. It had a disc in when I installed 10.4 with some last minute backup stuff. I wonder if that made a difference.

Hi from France,
I experienced the same trouble with my PowerMac 2x867 MHz, an Adaptec Card 2906, an old Zip 100 and OS 10.4.2 : a whole bunch of "kernel panic". On the Adaptec site, I read they do no more develop versions of drivers for OS X... well, the hint with a Zip disk in the unit works, but only if inserted before turning power on on the Mac. After a first "kernel panic", even shutting down, inserting a Zip disk and powering on again does not work : I must restart under 10.3.9 (cautiously, I have installed 10.4.2 on an external bootable FW disk), then power off, then insert Zip disk and then restart... It is quicker to crank up an old farm tractor engine!
I have not yet tried to put another SCSI device in the chain to see if the trouble comes from the fact that with no disk inside, the Zip unit is not seen by OS X (have a look at "System Info" -I guess it is the name for US OS version-, I see my SCSI card but not the Zip unit except if a disk is inside). I have an old SCSI external disk I can use... if I can find it somewhere!
I hope somebody finds a good solution and sorry for my French English language...

AFAIK, Adaptec is now longer developing products (including drivers) for the Mac plattform.
http://adaptec-tic.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/adaptectic.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?pfaqid=11052

Also some Adaptec cards are no longer working in 10.4.

If you want SCSI anyway, there are cards from ATTO, Initio, Acard and a Firewire to SCSI adapter from Ratoc.

Same problem here.

Adaptec AHA-2930** SCSI card causes a kernel panic when booting Mac OS X 10.4.2 if an external SCSI CD-R is turned on (no problem if it is turned off). No problem with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier versions.

The culprit seems to be the driver: Adaptec290X-2930.kext

Apple has not yet updated such driver (dated 2002), but has updated other drivers for Adaptec cards. These are in "/System/Library/Extensions":

---
The drivers below are dated 2002:

Adaptec290X-2930.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec39160.kext
--
But Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext is dated 26 March 2005!!!
---

So Apple could just update them all or at least the culprit in this case: Adaptec290X-2930.kext

Thanks.

Hey there,

Sorry I'm late in responding... But in answer to the question of whether I have checked out Adaptec's website regarding compatibility issues with their SCSI cards and Mac OS X 10.4 (and further updates), I was not able to find any information on this issue on the site. Also, I tried calling them, but was not able to get any information without service charges (I don't want to have to pay to be told it doesn't work!) And no, I cannot return the Adaptec card to the authorized Apple dealer from whom I bought it, as their 7-day return policy was exceeded before I had bought OS X 10.4 –even though they suggested that it was a great operating system and that I would have no problems (the fact is that they hadn't yet encountered this issue, and for them to later test the card would result in a service charge of which I feel I already know the answer) ....but thanks for your inquiry anyways.

I understand that there are other SCSI cards out there, but was told from the dealer that they are much more expensive (hundreds of dollars more –and I bought my Adaptec SCSI card used). I am not willing to pay the extra expense, and have decided to live with a work around solution of partitioning my drive: one part for OS X 10.2.6, the other for OS X 10.4.1 –this way, I can have fully unhindered access to my Syquest 135 EZ Drive without worrying about "kernel panics" (this is until of course when Adaptec decides to make compatible drivers for OS X 10.4, or when Apple's operating system updates are written to be compatible with Adaptec's SCSI cards –or else when pigs fly....

P.S.: Nicolas has some alternatives to Adaptec SCSI cards which may be helpful –I don't know what prices they go for... Also, Gabriel Dorado has stated that it's an Adaptec driver issue –these may be of help for others out there who like myself are having some troubles.

Hi,

exactly the same symptoms with an old external Fujitsu MO drive attached to an Adaptec 2906, used for backups.

No solution found yet. The backup runs once a week, so the computer is shut down, the MO drive switched on, the backup disk is inserted and the computer restarted.

After the backup the disk is ejected, the computer and the drive shut down, and the computer restarted. Otherwise the already described kernel panics happen.
