On a side note, I do not know if VPC loads any extensions at startup. If it is designed to load something on startup and you installed Tiger using any method besides upgrade, it would probably not load those extensions. You can attempt to fix this by reinstalling VPC. Good luck.
Since your upgrade, has anyone seen a problem with the Virtual Switch not working in Virtual PC both 6 and 7 versions? Would appreciate suggestions to fix this. Everything else seems to have gone smoothly with the upgrade.

VPC 7 is not Tiger compatable as of yet AFAIK. Microsoft will release a free point upgrade within the next few weeks to address comptabaility issues.

The few weeks is 2-3 months says Microsoft. So if few is 12, it's a few. On the bright side apaprently other than Virtual networking the rest seems to be OK.
check out the notes under VPC here:

I am running Virtual PC 6 (have VPC on shelf but not got around to installing it) and run tiger 10.4 now.
I run into the same problem, but I found a (tedious) workaround:
Start up your saved pc with this virtual switch problem, go to the networking symbol in the VPC window klik on it and network settings and change the settings around from Shared NetworkingVirtual Switch or vice versa
the pc reboots and I got it to work under Tiger with Shared NEtworking
(we are actually using MS Project and Groove.net virtual office under VPC 6)
It seems to me that ignoring these virtual switch messsages works and When I have it set to Shared Networking it works (now two times tested)...
greetings Maarten

VirtualPC's release 7.0.2 currently says it is completely Tiger compatible suggesting that the Virtual Switch problems have been resolved. Can anyone confirm this to be the case?
I upgraded from VPC 6.1.1 to 7.0.1 (what was on the VPC CD) and then updated to VPC 7.0.2. After removing VPC 6.1.1 and using only VPC 7.0.2, the virtual switch error no longer occurred. I also changed the Networking settings from Shared Networking to Virtual Switch.
Thank you.
Yes it is completely compatible nowl
Ok - upgraded to Tiger 10.4.2 then upgraded to VPC v7.0.2 Now occasionally when I start up VPC I get a hard crash where the entire screen grays out and a nasty message comes up and tells me I need to hold the power key down for a while to restart the Mac. I never had this sort of issue with Panther. Anyone else seeing this?
Stephen,
What you are seeing is a kernel panic. Since it doesn't relate directly to Virtual Switch which now works with VirtualPC, I've started a new thread so we can isolate your issue:
a brody, "Kernel panics after installation of VirtualPC continued...", 07:56pm Sep 22, 2005 CDT

Stephen, I had the same problems and spent lots of time on the phone with MS, they were VERY helpful. The problem seems to be with 10.4.2 (or rather, how 7.0.2 interacts with it). If you have upgraded to 7.0.2 BEFORE you have upgraded to 10.4.2, you need to uninstall VPC (first drag your PC to the desktop). Then reinstall 7.0.2. This fixed my problems of kernel panics (yes they were kernel panics, that's what the message said).
Remember, 10.4.2, THEN 7.0.2. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip -- when you say unistall VPC does this mean trash the app that is there now, do a reinstall from the original disks and then upgrade again?

Actually, there is an uninstall program on the disk. It's in the utilities folder (or something like that). Use this method as it gets all the ancillary files.
I tried the uninstall and reinstall. Still getting Kernel panic. Also tried the privacy setting in spotlight to prohibit indexing of the virtual PC list. Still getting panic. It appears that more often than not I will get the panic when I quit virtual PC. I have been shutting down windows prior to exiting virtual PC and it has seemed to stop the Kernel panic that would most often occur at that time, however, I am still getting panics at various other times. The fewer programs and windows I have open in OSX the less frequent my Kernel panics as well. Note: My iMac G5 is NOT experiencing any Kernel panics and I have the same configuration, however, I have 2 other Powerbooks (1G & 850) and both mimic the behavior of this machine.
Frank,
Welcome to Apple Discussions! Your issue is probably more in depth than just VirtualPC, since kernel panics can be due to driver, directory, or bad hardware issues. VirtualPC may simply have triggered it due to its high system demands. Since your issue requires some isolation, to determine its cause, I've started a new thread for you, with explanation of what causes kernel panics, and how to isolate them:
a brody, "VirtualPC Kernel panics, continuation from previous thread", 05:47pm Sep 27, 2005 CDT
