Upgrading Memory Mac Mini Power PC 1.42 GHz Machine

My mother's Mac Mini was purchased by my now-deceased father. It has a Power PC G4 processor (unlike my Mac Mini's Intel Core Duo). It has a total of 512 MB PC3200 memory.

I have two sticks of 512 MB PC2-4200 memory that I pulled from a Sony Vaio and wondered about upgrading her memory to 1 GB. The memory is the exact same size as the memory that I removed from my Mac Mini Intel Core Duo model.

Memory-4-less sells 1GB DDR-333 (PC2700) for $60 and recommends this for the Power PC Mac Mini. That does not seem like much.

There are apparently two memory slots in a Mac Mini. If I put in one 1GB stick from a retailer, will that work? That is, do I need to have identical sticks of memory in the two slots instead of one stick in one slot?

Do you think the leftover memory I have, the two sticks of 512 MB PC2-4200 memory, might work in the Power PC Mac Mini? It would only save the $60 and does not seem worth the risk and hassle if I could just buy her new memory.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

There is only ONE memory slot in a G4 mini, so the existing 512Mb module would have to be removed and replaced by a single 1Gb module in order to upgrade the RAM to the maximum the G4 system can take. The price tag is well worth it - the more RAM the mini has the smoother it will work, particularly if using multiple applications or software which has a heavy memory overhead.

AndyO, i too have the PowerPC mini with the original 512Mb of memory. I went to an Apple store and asked the Genius guys if they upgrade memory on the PowerPC mini. I'm not comfortable taking on the challenge myself. The Genius guys told me that they would no longer upgrade the PowerPC edition, only the Intel Mini.

Without Apple's help, where should I go to have my Mini's memory upgraded considering I don't want it screwed up by some shop who claims they can do it, but than is really not very good.

Thanks

Before upgrading your RAM, again I would like to inform you that the mac minis doesn't have a customer-installable-part so if you open your mac mini, it will void the warranty. Now on how to locate Apple Authorized Service Provider, go to http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/ and then provide your zip code. You will have a list there of AASP's with their addresses and phone numbers.
