Making a alias to a network drive

In the past versions of OSX, I've been able to create an alias to a network drive on the desktop (or in any other folder). On my new 10.5.2 system, it looks like I can't do that. Am I missing something?

G5 2.5GhzX4 4GB FCS 5.1.4 G-Raid FW800, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
