audio loopback function in Logic?

In attempting to answer another question a forum participant stated that Logic has a "loopback" function for audio such that the output of a standalone virtual instrument can be looped back into a Logic Bus or Aux channel without involvement of an audio interface or its software - - or any other software (such as SoundFlower or Jack OSX). Unfortunately he did not say exactly how to accomplish this. I would very much like to know if this is possible and, if it is, I would be most appreciative of a detailed description of how to accomplish it.

Thanks,
Steve

Easy:
Route your Instrument/Audio track to a Bus and select that Bus as an Input for an Audio track (in the little square above the Channelstrip fader where it says "Input...". Set the Bus output to "no output" and monitor your Recording through the Recording channel. Then just record your material onto the new track.

Still not clear:

How do I route the audio output of an external standalone host application to an Instrument or Audio track within Logic. The Vienna Ensemble's outputs are limited to the audio interface's channels, built-in audio or a bus I create within Vienna Ensemble. Vienna Ensemble - when used as a standalone - does not "see" Logic as a potential audio output object. It receives MIDI from Logic via the IAC bus.

Is there a way in which Logic can be made to see the Vienna Ensemble's audio outputs? Vienna Ensemble can also be used as a plugin - - something I already know how to do.

The advantage of using it as a standalone is that one can use it as a plugin and standalone or with multiple standalones simultaneously - - with each standalone having a separate memory partition and all these memory partitions separate from that inhabited by the plugin - - thus providing a way of exceeding the 3GB limit for loading samples imposed by 32-bit software. No doubt I am missing something.

Sorry I misread your post - standalone Instruments can be routed into Logic after setting up an Aggregate device in the Audio Midi Setup of your Mac and using that Aggregate device as the Audio Interface in your Standalone app.

Here is a thread about setting up an AD:

Thanks for your help. I am already using the standalone with the MOTU 2408. I run a short ADAT cable from the ADAT output of Bank C to the ADAT input of Bank B. The standalone is assigned to channels in Bank C. An AUX channels are set so that their inputs are channels from Bank B and their Outputs are 1-2. This works, but introduces some latency and is not as elegant or efficient as the software solutions that are provided by RME for all its interfaces and by Apogee for its Symphony card based interfaces - - which allow the connection in software of any output to any input.
