Help syncing iCal with Palm

I have been using iCal on my desktop and would like to carry it on my Palm. Names and addresses sync OK, but not the iCal

Palm Desktop 4.2.2
iCal 3.0.2 (1236)
iSync 3.0 (568.0)

I tried to install iSync Palm Conduit 1.2 & get message need iSync 1.2 first
Then I tried iSync 1.5 (closest to 1.2 I found) and got message nee iCal 1.5.1 first
Then I tried iCal 1.55 and got message that it can not be installed on this computer.

Any suggestions? I really prefer the iCal to the palm desktop calendar

iMac intel 2.16Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

After hearing that Mark Space has indeed proven that the problem IS Apple and iCal, I have no doubt that this is intentional on Apple's part. Why would any company take a perfectly working application, such as iCal, and intentionally disable it's syncing feature with all PDA's and Smartphones? Simple. Apple is trying to push people into buying their $500-$600 iPhone! Amazing how the "only" smartphone that will now work with iCal is iPhone? This is not a coincidence my friends, it's intentional. And it stinks of the same type of business practices that "gatesworld" promotes. I am truly disappointed that Jobs has steered Apple in this direction. There is simply no excuse for Apple to keep from restoring the syncing feature of iCal for cell phones and PDA's. Shame on you Apple!

You must not be paying attention.

While it is solely Apple's fault, it is NOT intentional. The issue lies predominantly with the iCal team, who failed to build a synchronization component into iCal 3 that worked properly. Get it? The problem is with iCal 3.

And, because the problem is with iCal 3, the issue affects EVERYONE and every synchronization application, device or server, including iTunes and the iPhone.

Nice conspiracy theory, but you have no idea at all of what you are talking about. None.

I disagree completely. This does NOT behoove Apple to have a "non-working" application in their stable. My only complaint is that it is taking them so long to address it. It must be quite a technical problem overlooked during the rewrite that it is forcing them to completely redo large quantities of code. When ever back-stepping with a rewritten program is required, all attempts to fix the problem generally introduces new problems.

I have no ill-will towards Apple. While at some later time I will probably want an iPhone, I strongly dis-agree with any thought of an internal conspiracy.

Well, .Mac Sync and .Mac have nothing at all to do with the synchronization of a Palm device. That supporting role is played by iSync and the iSync Palm Conduit, if you are using the Apple solution.

The iPhone began shipping more than eight months ago. Are you saying that your Palm device has not synchronized properly for six months? Does this change happen to coincide with you installation of Mac OS X 10.5 or later, or is the footer accurate in reporting that you are running Mac OS X 10.4.10?

Why not start a far more specific thread about your issue, including a complete description of the issue and your configuration?

It's a strange coincidence. My Palm has syncd with my Macs for years. It is the main reason I pay
for .mac

Less than two months after the iPhone is released I can't sync my Treo any more.

Your Palm has sync'd with your Macs' for years, and that's the reason you pay for .Mac? One has nothing to do with the other, so if you're paying for .Mac simply so you can sync your Palm with your Mac, you've been wasting your money.

As to your second point, wasn't it about two months after the iPhone was released that OSX 10.5 was released? So, here also, one has nothing to do with the other.

I, personally, am supporting Apple's efforts in most things they are doing. They have released a beautiful "1st version" of the long anticipated (as well as rumored) iPhone, they have continued to improve their hardware line (including the iPod), they continue to improve their operating system, they are outperforming the competition and gaining new customers (as well as converts), and their bottom line continues to show net gain (which, by the way, is important for anything in the future). I would've jumped on the iPhone had it not been associated with AT&T and I wasn't locked into a contract with Verizon. That's why I'm still using my Treo. That's why I still need to sync it to my Mac.

It does NOT help Apple to purposely "break" something that will only make customers angry, and conspiracy theorists giving them bad press. I would suggest that you constructively work with Apple to fix anything that you're not happy with rather than think they're associated with the "big, bad wolf."

Please, let's not turn this into something it's not. I can understand, and empathize, with your frustration as I'm there too. While I'm not privy to anything in the works, I can guarantee you that eventually, this problem will be worked out; and probably sooner than later. My post reporting that Missing Sync does not completely solve the problem was only to fore-warn others so they knew what they were buying, not to start this kind of exchange.

Michael,

A far better post than mine. Thank you.

I have this same problem and have followed your instructions up to and including the combo (not delta) update. As i have 10.5.2 on my mac now, the installer said "You cannot install Mac OS X Update Combined on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." is this ok? Was isync updated since 10.5.1 (the version from the DVD)? Should i just continue and load isync and the palm conduits?

Thanks!

It is likely that you are synchronizing iCal events and tasks but not Address Book contacts. There are several faults that can result in this outcome and display this message.

If you have contacts in your Address Book organized in groups, synchronize all instead on individual groups or do away completely with your group assignments.

If event and task synchronization works but contact synchronization fails, open iSync, press the Tungsten icon do display the synchronization parameter pane and deselect or uncheck Calendars when synchronizing Contacts. Do the opposite when synchronizing events and tasks. Doing so will require two passes, and you will have to disable one and enable the other between them.

ugh...i will try this. i went through this when i upgraded to leopard and palm syncing went down the hole. I got missing sync and that did not solve the problems either, so i returned that. i'd rather not have to pay for something that should work in the first place. But i've resided to "manually syncing" my data!!! how archaic!

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it!
