The backup disk image could not be mounted

Time Machine attempted to start it's backup on my TC and came up with the following error:
The backup disk image could not be mounted.

As anyone else seen this?

Mac OS X (10.5), Dual G5, MB Black, Touch 16, Nano

Was this the FIRST backup or a subsequent backup ?

I've tried doing the "Disconnect All Users", as well as all the other suggestions by everyone else on here but... no, it's still not working.

This isn't very satisfactory. It's a simple thing, surely, to make this work. Come on Apple! I'm about to put this back in the box and take it back to the Apple Store.
