Trackpad, keyboard freezing periodically, along with Finder

I have a Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz, and I installed Leopard a few days after it came out. Within the last two weeks I've noticed that my track-pad starts to lag minutes before freezing along with my keyboard. Usually, it will stop responding for two to five minutes before it comes back again and freezes again, other times I have to hard restart my computer.

Also with this, finder is starting to freeze completely, my applications won't respond and I get that gray screen that says I have to restart my computer.

I don't know if this is a Leopard problem or a Macbook Pro problem, but it's starting to annoy me, especially since this is the second problem I've had with my computer. I can't afford to get it sent off because I"m a student and I need it for school.

I am having the same issue. I have a program called "Hardware Growler" installed that tells you whenever anything changes hardware wise. Although the keyboard and trackpad seem to be "freezing", according to Hardware Growler, the internal keyboard/trackpad USB connection actually disconnected and then re-connected. I've tested it by hooking up an external keyboard/mouse and can confirm that the external keyboard and mouse work 100% of the time, regardless of whether the internal USB connection is disconnected or not.

I was having a similar issue with my trackpad, where it would often not respond for several seconds when I first try to move the cursor.

I think that de-selecting the "Ignore accidental trackpad input" option under Trackpad/Mouse System Preferences "fixed" it. I'm not having that issue anymore, but now I have the cursor randomly moving around the screen while I type, which is annoying (albeit less annoying that having the cursor freeze up for several seconds at a time). My guess is that the "Ignore accidental trackpad input" setting is a little over-zealous.

Hope this helps,

Craig

same problem on a MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, 10.5.2.
i haven't been getting the GSOD, just the trackpad and keyboard freezing.
like typasch, i can get the machine to respond to external USB keyboard/mouse, so the problem is most likely softward, not hardware. also, sometimes when i restart, the machine is back to normal, but usually not for long.
if someone has an answer to this problem, that would be great. i have a paper for tuesday and cant deal.

I'm having the exact same issues.

MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz, Leopard.

First the trackpad stops responding (and the cursor vanishes), and then the keyboard follows a short while afterwards. I then have to do a hard reset to get it back to life.

It really does happen quite frequently (at least one a day, I'd say), and I am also seeing the grey screen of death far more often than I'd like.

I also often find that apps like Spaces and Expose do can not be activated by keyboard shortcuts - I'm not sure if this is related at all though.

I'm having the same issue with my Macbook Air. Everything worked perfectly until yesterday. The only thing different is that yesterday I installed Parallels. I'm not currently running it, nor have I even gotten as far as installing the OS (Win XP), so I'm not sure why this would even have an effect. This morning I was using my MBA for a couple hours, everything fine, then left it for an hour, came back, and I'm getting the random freezing. The cursor will move (respond to my finger on the trackpad), then freeze for a few seconds. Then move again (in response to my finger). Then freeze. Then I tried playing a song in itunes while this was happening -- and the song plays for a few seconds, then freezes, then starts up again. So it's not even just the cursor. But now, 10 minutes later, everything is completely fine. What the heck could this be? Overheating? Processor overload? I can't figure it out. (The only other variable common to both yesterday and today's incident is that both of these occurrences came after waking the MBA from sleep mode.)

I'm having the same problems with one extra problem: I noticed that just before the trackpad and keyboard stop responding it becomes difficult make a 'right mouse button' click with the trackpad (by putting two fingers on the trackpad and clicking). It's just recognized as a normal mouse click, particularly noticeable when clicking on dock icons.

Has anyone else experienced this symptom?

Hi smith4c, everybody else,

This seems like one of those problems which affect a lot of people but nobody seems to have a clear answer to. This is the only thing that really bothers me about Apple products. Although I can't say of this problem is more frequent than all the problems connected to the infamous 'Graphics Update', it is sure as annoying! So anyone that has any influence: please, help us!

I experience this symptom too, but not always before my trackpad starts freezing. I sometimes have difficulty double-clicking. The weird thing is that when I attempt a double-click using two fingers, the mouse seems to be 'stuck' for about a second.

It seems that the mouse- and keyboard freezing is mostly caused after I wake my macbook pro up from sleep. Most of the time, this is when I have just connected or disconnected my external screen, keyboard and mouse. This could affect the problem, although I'm not sure. Usually, after a reboot the problem is gone.

By the way, I have only seen the GSOD once since I bought my MBP in November, so everyone strugling with this: good luck

Another weird problem relating to the keyboard and mouse:

After trying to quit the Copy window of Finder with a key combination (Apple-Q), my keyboard and mouse just froze. The power-button did react, and displayed the 'do you want to sleep/restart/shut down'-dialog box. But I couldn't select any option, so I just closed the lid on my MBP, and woke it up a few seconds later. That gave me my mouse and keyboard functionality back, but now the keyboard is displaying a random 'lag'. When I'm typing, for a few seconds/keystrokes, no keys are registered by my Mac.

I'm beginning to think that all these problems have a root in the power management hardware/software

I notice that the topic says the question is answered, but I didn't read any answers. My trackpad and clicker pad also freeze. I have no control over my apps. Last time it happened I was working on a Mail message and I only had Mail, Dictionary and Safari open. I usually need to hold down the power button for several seconds before I can get the system to shut down. And then again I need to hold the button down to restart. I don't know if this is related, but every time I do a Disk Utility, Repair System Permissions, I have a huge mess of "ACL detected but not expected..."

Hi all,

I am experiencing exactly the same problem as jorisscheppers (something happening in the Netherlands? ;-))

Apart from the keyboard and trackpad freezing for seconds every now and then (really annoying!) they freeze completely next day after connecting the laptop to the TV (this has happened two days in a row). I had to force shutdown the computer for 3 times, closing the computer to go to sleep twice and finally (when the keyboard seemed to respond for more than a couple of seconds), I restarted the computer. Removing the battery didn't help at all.

Basically, I have the same problem as all of you, but no solution... Hope somebody help us soon.

Regards / Groeten / Saludos,

antonio d.
