Well, I'm another user with this problem. I've noticed it sporadically for the past eight months or so. It seems that a message occasionally just disappears, usually right after I read it for the first time on the iPhone. At first, I thought I accidentally just pushed the trash button and didn't notice it. Now, I am certain this is an actual problem/bug with the iPhone IMAP implementation.

My setup: Core duo iMac (10.5.2 current) at home with Mail.app running all of the time for filtering and spam collection - mail gets checked every 5 minutes. iPhone running 1.1.4, mail checked either manually or every 30 minutes. Occasional TiBook client also running Mail.app. My primary mail service is not .Mac, but rather a third party who runs a standard IMAP server. I've been using this setup for a few years, save the iPhone, without this problem.

I have the iPhone set to keep deleted messages "on my iPhone" and to never delete them.

My guess is a bug in the iPhone mail application such when a message is opened and the network is disrupted, the message is deleted rather than marked as read.

Very annoying and the message is gone - not in a trash can, not in a spam folder, not on my desktop machine, etc. It seems to happen mostly when the iPhone is on the EDGE network. It happens perhaps once a week or maybe twice a month.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem. Weirdly, it has happened twice now and both times to emailers with Hispanic names. Of course that could be a coincidence. I have a .Mac email address and I use Mail with different versions on three Macs to download it.

The first time it happened I opened the email message on my iPhone on the way home and it had disappeared from both iPhone and Macs at home by the time I got back. I asked my friend if he had sent a message, he confirmed it, and I asked for the message to be resent, which it was - three times, but it never turned up. The sender then created a new email rather than forwarding the old one and it got through and stayed through.

I just put it down to a quirk in the system until it just happened again just now. I opened the email on my iPhone and read it, but when I went to get my email it didn't register on my email list. Another friend with a Hispanic name. By the time I looked back at my iPhone it had Connected and Updated and lo and behold, no email.

My Settings>Mail>.Mac Account>Advanced>Deleted Mailbox is set to "On my iPhone" and yet the missing message does not appear in Trash. Oddly, though this is set to "On My IPhone" the check appears next to .Mac account when I press "On My iPhone" and I can't get it to check Trash, which is the only Mailbox listed under "On my iPhone".

Settings>Mail>.Mac>Advanced>Deleted Messages/Remove is set to Never
My "Ask Before Deleting" on the iPhone was switched to Off and is now switched to On. Maybe that makes a difference but I can't honestly work out how it would.

I searched on all the Macs in the house to see if it had stuck anywhere and it's gone from all of them - Spotlight can't find it on any of them.

What worries the paranoid worrier in me is that the problem might be more widespread than I previously thought but I only happen to have intercepted these two emails on my Iphone in a five minute window before they were deleted and in fact it has happened to a lot more emails without me knowing. I have no way of telling.

I also communicate with family and friends in Cuba, which makes me paranoid about it apparently only affecting incoming emails from people with Hispanic names. But hacking into my .Mac account and diverting any emails from Hispanic names would be impossible right, so I'm just being paranoid and silly, aren't I?

It seems to me to be a .Mac server problem. It isn't a local deleting problem as far as I can tell because the emails aren't in Trash anywhere. Nor are they anywhere on the server if I go and look at my email at www.mac.com rather than letting Mail download it for me. They aren't in the Trash on the .Mac server either. Though my .Mac mail preferences Mailbox Behaviours box was not checked to send deleted mail to Trash, so an accidental deletion would leave no trace. I've changed it now to move deleted messages to Trash. Hope that helps... but it doesn't explain why the email deleted itself in the first place and why it didn't download from .Mac even as I was reading it on my iPhone.

Any ideas less paranoid than my own gratefully received...

I have noticed this happening a few times as well. Usually seems to happen when I have 2-3 emails just delivered to the phone. Before I can open one of them, the top unopened one will disappear. I have found that I can retrieve it by refreshing (reconnecting) the email (and it will download the missing email again). Truly believe this is an iPhone email function bug.
