Duplicate dock icons

Hi, My father is running leopard 10.5, and he somehow has duplicated his dock icons such as photo booth, mail, etc, etc, When he tries to drag them back into the dock they bounce back onto the desktop if you drag the duplicate into the trash to clear the desk top you can't open the program from the dock because when you click on it a message appears "you cannot open this program because its in the trash" Can someone tell me how to delete these shortcuts and still have the ability to open the program, Many thanks in advance...

Please explain EXACTLY what is happening. Your post is really confusing. what exactly do you mean by duplicating dock icons?
It sounds like your application ended up on the desktop instead of the Applications folder. Right-click on one of the "duplicated" applications in the dock and choose "show in Finder". This should open a Finder window showing the original location of the application. As I said, normally, it should sit in the Applications folder. If instead it's sitting on the desktop, just drag it to the Applications folder. But for heaven's sake don't trash it as you've tried to do! This is the original application! The icon in the dock is just a shortcut to it.
