I have a brand new MBP and have noticed something strange when scrolling using the trackpad (two finger gesture)...when scrolling in Safari text will become distorted. For example, on this board here, if I scroll the page using the trackpad, some lines of text will become distorted and almost unreadable. If I scroll past it and then return, sometimes the text returns to normal. Anyway, it happens a lot but only when scrolling using the trackpad. If I use the arrow keys I do not have this problem. Anyone else see this? If not, can you give it a test and report back?
I have had the same problem when I first got my computer in May. I had another problem and did some looking in to general maintenance. I found a program MacJanitor to run the maintenance tasks. I have not had the problem sense I started running the tasks every week. I hope this helps.
I went to my local apple authorised repair centre to seek for help. They ended up replacing a new screen for me because they thought it was screen issue.
Obviously the problem didn't go away. They asked me to contact Apple directly but Apple doesn't seem to provide direct support to those purchases that were more than 90 Days.
This is so frustrating and I really want some answer to this. Can anyone help me to find a way to get in touch with Apple regarding this issue?
I have been running this at full blast for about a week since I had my logic board and superdrive replaced. The temps are very cool about 136F on the gpu heatsink at an hour of video gaming. When I quite the temp goes down around 100F. Despite the cooler temps I still have the same 3-10 second lockups in some of my previous posts. Its not even worth gaming.
Right, time for another update -- and this time it is good news.
As you know, Apple Store Sydney took my MacBook Pro with screen corruption, flashing video and ripples/tearing on scrolling in for investigation and possible repair.
They were able to reproduce the problem while booting off an external drive with a clean installation of Leopard, indicating that it is not a software problem (at least, not a corruption of my installation of OS X -- it could possibly still be a problem baked into OS X itself.)
The said they had had a number of MacBook Pros in with a similar problem -- four or five to date, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with every MacBook Pro they've shipped, they said.
They consulted with Apple Engineering in the US and were told that there is "no fix for this problem, either through hardware or software", which they said meant Engineering was still trying to figure out what exactly was the cause of it.
So, official company line was no repair possible. However, as a courtesy they swapped the logic board out anyway.
Since I picked it up on Tuesday, (it is now Friday night Sydney time) I haven't seen any of the problems. Videos now play back without flashing white blocks all over them, scrolling is fine in Safari and all other apps with no breaking up of the display, etc.
I am happy that after my six months of owning a faulty MacBook Pro it is now back to the condition it should be in when purchased -- I'm just sorry I put up with it for so long thinking it must have been a software problem.
Note, nothing at all has changed in my software config since taking it into the store. They simply swapped the logic board and that fixed the problem.
So if you are experiencing this problem, I strongly urge you to take your MacBook Pro back to Apple to be fixed. Even if some of you do not get the same courtesy I got in getting the logic board replaced without advice to do so from Apple Engineering, the rising numbers of repair requests for this problem may make Apple realise it's a bigger problem than they think it is.
NB. details of the NVIDIA chip on the new logic board:
I have this problem too (MacBook Pro 2.4GHz C2D with 4Gb RAM).
I purchased this stock MacBook from the Apple Store in Glasgow around Feb this year and never really noticed the issue until quite recently. Like everyone else, the problem seems to be intermittent. I have no hacks or anything installed on my machine which is running 10.5.4.
The issue tends to appear most while 2-finger scrolling in Safari and Mail, but I also have the white flashing artifacts when watching any movie on the web and also when mousing over events in iPhoto. Using the cursor keys helps somewhat, but I still experience the issue to an extent. When running on AC power, the issue is nowhere to be seen.
My Graphics card details as follows:
Hi Daniel....don't want to be a harbinger of doom, but your chipset details match my faulty one's exactly. Looks like there's no change in the chipset specifics between replacement and faulty GeForce 8600M GT chipsets.
Just a thought: Has anyone with this problem tried hooking up their MBP to an external display and seeing if the problem is still there?
I see that "Turmoil" posted about that in this thread back in 3/08 and suggested it cured the problem. So far, I've noticed exactly the same behavior. When I use my laptop's display, I frequently but not always get the scrolling graphics glitches. But when I'm hooked up to an Apple Cinema display, I haven't seen the problem yet.
If this is true rather than coincidence, it doesn't sound like a software problem!
Mine is not getting worse, but neither has it improved. I took mine in to an Apple service provider today who has ordered me a new logic board (the graphic card is fixed unto it), under warranty. Hopefully this will be the end of distorted text, major and minor screen anomalies and freezes.
All who are having this problem, I suggest you do likewise before your warranty runs out and you have to foot the bill for a new logic board or live with a very sub par computer. Good luck all.
i found that upon reboot the problem subsided.
installed 10.5.5 and thus far no rebooting. stressing it out with sleep and aperture, illustrator and flash sites.
