Mail resends old mails on its own

I have excatly the same problem and it has happened for the last month my mail is from dates 16 17 june... i first thought it was a virus but my system is clean any help would be amazing

I am working on a friends system, and he is also having the same problem. I asked if it could be the ISP that is doing it, but they said it is the Mac. These are e-mails for a business, and it is clients receiving them, so it is important that this be resolved asap. Any help, PLEASE! Thanks.

Are any third party keyboards or is a third party mouse in use? Is everyone reporting this using IMAP?

I'm having exactly the same problem!

I've got two PowerBook G4s here, that use the same ISP. Each collects mail from a number of different IMAP accounts.

One of the PowerBook G4s has the problem, the other doesn't.

Is this a virus?

I also have a PB G4. I have had this problem in the past but it seemed to resolve itself. Yesterday however I heard a mail go out again. So this seems to be a recurring problem. I'd like to see some real answers to this issue from Apple support. As noted from one of the responses in this thread, someone has business contacts recieving old emails. I can only assume this is very disconcerting for the owner. This is obviously an issue with the mail program that is occuring more often than not. Tip of the iceberg... Would appreciate any more research on this subject.

The problem seems to come and go. Can't see any pattern to it.

I think we need a statement from Apple on this one. (A fix would be nice too!) Otherwise, it's time to junk Mail in favour of a more reliable email client.

Thanks for answering the questions, and sorry to not see until just now.

I am guessing that there may be some incompatibility with the third-party keyboard or mouse, and some commands are not what you think they are. Please check for updates to any drivers you may have loaded (if any) to use these devices.

I am going to reread the entire topic, now, for other implications.

More information would be helpful. What, if any, differences are there between the Macs you are using? Are either using a separate, third-party keyboard or mouse?

Does your Sent mailbox have the repeat-send messages stored?

The two G4 PowerBooks have identical specifications. Neither machine has an external keyboard. The machine without the problem has a logitech 4-button mouse. The machine with the problem has a MacMice TheMouse. But the problem happens when no mouse or any other accessory is connected.

The Sent mailbox does contain the repeat-send messages.

On VersionTracker, I cannot find that any driver has been released for this mouse since Jan '05, but other reports make me think one may have come out for Tiger, and may have problems. I would be suspicious that there is some incompatibility. I think you should uninstall the current driver, and test with no mouse again, or with the logitech mouse.

No driver was installed for TheMouse. Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 seem to work with the mouse without any extra driver or system preferences setting.

This would seem eliminate one issue, at least. Switching the mouse between Macs would help to isolate the problem, if any, with the TheMouse device.

There is nothing in Mail, directly that I can theorize to cause this behavior. It would appear to require involvement of communications with the IMAP servers.

BTW, what SMTP do you use for as your Outgoing Server -- one provided by your IMAP provider, or one provided by your ISP?

The randomness of this behavior complicates things. Another thing to check, if it can be checked, is whether messages sent somehow remain in the Outbox -- once sent nothing should be in the Outbox. In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and locate the Outbox.mbox folder. Open this folder, and tell what files and folders are found within the Outbox.mbox folder.

Following this observation, Quit Mail, and remove the Outbox.mbox folder from the Mail folder, entirely, by dragging it to your Desktop. Then relaunch Mail, and test sending a message. Mail will create a new Outbox.mbox folder. The proper items to be in the Outbox.mbox are a folder named Messages, and perhaps a file named Info.plist, but mine does not have the latter.. The Messages folder should be empty once messages are sent.

All the accounts used by Mail on both machines are POP accounts.

The SMTP server used on the problem machine is hosted by the ISP. The good machine uses the same SMTP server, plus several others.

Tried removing Outbox.mbox - on relaunching Mail, Outbox.mbox is recreated, and the problem continues as before.

NB today, the randomly sent messages are not going into the sent folder.
