IMAP keywords (labels)

Hi,

I've been wondering why there is no support for labels of any sorts in mail.app. I know of a script that will do some coloring, but it's quite limited.

Ideally, what I'm looking for is support for IMAP keywords that we could define however we want. Thunderbird has support for this, though the labels are hard-coded and limited in number.

This strikes me as an extremely usefull feature. For example, see gmail's labels, it's much easier to organise information than using folders (an email can have multiple labels but only fit in one folder without duplication). However, gmail has its shortcomings, and I'd be much happier using an imap server and a mail client with support for labels..

I know I'd be hard pressed to find a mail client that has full support for IMAP keywords right now, despite the fact that it's in the IMAP spec... why don't people want to implement it?

Anyone ever heard of such a plan for mail.app, or some addon that could do that?

Thanks,
gabriel.

Yeah, that's the script I saw.

However, it stores labels locally, meaning that you can't access your account from another machine (or through webmail) and get the labels..

I tend to carry my laptop around most of the time, but there are times when you just can't use your computer, and if what you get when you connect to your account is too different from what you're used to, it's close to useless.
E.g.: you have things nicely sorted in folders locally, but your POP account is just a huge pile of email (because there's no sync up with the server in POP); or, more to the point, you have emails nicely labeled on your local machine, but when you connect from another location to your IMAP server, all those labels are gone.
