Macbook Leopard Install Hanging

Help,

I have bought a retail version of Leopard 10.5.1 but every time I try and install it it just hangs there for ever doing nothing. Am I doing something wrong? I have trawled the groups and cannot find anyone else who has the same problem.
I have erased the HD repartitioned it and i still get the same result. Here is the log file showing the point that it gets to everytime before it just hangs.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

For the record it appears that the install stops when it is extracting the files.

Mar 7 09:43:09 localhost payloadExtractor177: Extracting...

If i do a minimal install I see the time to complete the install go down for the first minute or so then it just stops at 28 minutes or so. I have run the check installation dvd and it comes back ok.

Question now is, could it still be the media that is at fault?

Thanks

Richard.

OK so I still have the same problem and it's driving me nuts. I can read the disk and have created and image using disk utility. I want ot try and burn /resize the image so that i can put it on 2 dvd-r disks to see if that helps with the install process. I have now tried 3 different leopard install disk, so it is something really wierd.

Is there anyway I can resize the image over a couple of disks and still bot / install off them?

Thanks

Richard.

Last post now as i will be throwing this thing in the bin in the morning and going back to microsoft windoze. its a real shame but i can never recollect having this much trouble evr installing an os on a pc before.

I have noticed one thing, everytime it hangs the fan speeds up. I have done all the resets possible done the install every which way and i always get to the same point, it hangs when extracting files. no end of erasing or resting seems to cure the problem.

Anyone want to buy a macbook paper weight?

Sad really as i loved this little macbook fast to start up couldn't fault it.

I don't think I'll ever go near an Apple product again.

That is my thought. It may be a dirty DVD or scratched or damaged one.
Check the DVD visually.
The DVD may pass the self-test and still not be perfectly readable.
It could also be the optical drive getting too hot.
One test would be to try the install from an external optical drive.

I did the erase zero out data using DU, and I still get stuck at "extracting", It has been mentioned to me that the optical drive may be getting to hot, but the same thing happens even if i do it from an image off the hdd.

I have used 3 different leopard retail disks so i cannot believe that all 3 are bad dvds.

Maybe it is a problem with the optical drive, maybe it is something to do with the hdd / firmware or systems management. Who knows. It seems that apple care have no idea either.

I can install windows XP on it for heavans sake!! It's ridiculous that an apple os product will not install on native apple hardware.

Like I said earlier I will never buy an Apple computer again based on this experience. Windows Vista people moan about that OS but as far as I can see its streets ahead. To think I was almost an apple convert

One bricked macbook for sale spares or repair buyer collects and glues back together!

Richard, my thinking is that if stops at the same place on the installation disk then it also stops at the same place on the hard drive. So, if you still have any motivation remaining try partitioning the hard drive into two separate partitions and installing the OS on the second volume. If it still stops at the same place then maybe we can rule out the HD.

Jo,

I'll give that a try. I'll create the first partition as the install image and then create the 2nd partition as the target for the install. previously I have had the 1st partition as the target and the 2nd partition as the install image. You never know it might make a difference. I will also grab an external USB 2.0 DVD drive and try and install it that way too.

Ill let you know how things go. it will be a couple of days before I get a chance as we are on a family holiday.

thanks

Richard.

I have created 2 partitions. 1st Partition is 8 Gb and contains nothing, 2nd Partition is 65Gb and is the target for install. I have used the erase and install option and it hangs in the same place. I received an new dvd from apple this morning so I think we can safely rule outh the media and the hard disk.

I want to check that my memory is either genuine apple or is certified for use in the macbook. Please take into consideration that it worked fine with Tiger.

The only thing I have not tried is to install from an external optical drive, but I consider the fact that it will not install from either the internal optical or hdd as a far chance and that the problem is more likely to be something else.

Richard.
