Macbook Leopard Install Hanging

Help,

I have bought a retail version of Leopard 10.5.1 but every time I try and install it it just hangs there for ever doing nothing. Am I doing something wrong? I have trawled the groups and cannot find anyone else who has the same problem.
I have erased the HD repartitioned it and i still get the same result. Here is the log file showing the point that it gets to everytime before it just hangs.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

I went to see the Apple Genius / Gurus this evening at our "local" Apple store. They advised me that my Hard disk was fine and that it could be either a problem with memory as the install floods the memory and if I have a dodgy module then this could be the issue. Try removing one module at a time and running the install. Tried this and still the same, except it hangs at 1Hr 59Minutes now, and the log still shows extracting. Looks like their other prognosis is looking more likely, a faulty logic board! So I spent a shed load of money on a laptop a shed load of money on an OS upgrade which failed and highlights I have a duff machine!! How come it will allow any other OS to install?? XP, Vista, Ubuntu but not Leopard.

I have one last hope I emailed Apple HQ with my gripe and will be having a phone conversation with them in the morning. My Macbook is less than 18Months old, was working fine with Tiger and now is useless. I hope they find the right solution. If not look out for the add on Ebay!

I have the same problem (PowerBook G4, 768 MB, 1.33 GHz, 60 GB HD)

I wanted to make a clean install to sell the machine.

These are my experiments:

1) I own two Retail copies of Leopard. Clean install with BOTH copies hangs. So I'm sure it's not a physical problem with the DVDs.
So don't bet on a DVD replacement.

2) A clean install of Tiger works.
2b) An install of Leopard on top of Tiger shows the same problem as described.

0) Back in time:
I installed Leopard on top of Tiger (which has been installed on top of Panther) at the end of last year and it worked then.

3) Deleting PRAM doesn't help.

My guess is that Apple did something with a patch since then that prevents the installation.

The mystery deepens. I have now recieved the repalcement Tiger 10.4.8 discs which has allowed me to get Tiger back on the machine, so it would appear that the hardware is all ok,unless tiger is more tolerant of certain things. anyway at least i have my macbook back up and runningh now. just need to get leopard sorted.
hopefully the lovely people from apple will be able to help me.

I'll keep you posted.

I installed Leopard end of last year successfully. Since then I remember to install the following software:

- Several Eclipse milestones (this is not an install, just a copy)
- Devonagent http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/devonagent/index.html
- Equinux Stationery Pack http://www.equinux.com/de/products/stationery/index.html

and I updated Nova Media iSync plugins http://www.novamedia.de/epages/e_produkte_mac_ppis.html

Probably a few more but this is what I'm aware of.
I had Devonthink before. Asuming that Devonthink and Devonagent have a similar instalation technology, I don't assume that Devonagent is a problem.

Is there something on my list that others use, too?

I had no application enhancers none std boot agents or non native partitions. I even tried a completely new hdd but that made no difference.I do have tiger and all my apps installed again so im going to do an image to an external disk before i do anything else.

I have booted from the tiger startup disk and completed the hardware checks and the advanced hardware checks and they all complete without problems.

It is a tad frustrating.

Did you check your memory as you previously questioned?

I had the original memory from the factory installed on my G5 but the Leopard installer always hung. I bought memory from Apple, replaced what I had and the install worked. I then added back my other memory after the install and it is still working, months later.

After booting up from the install disk, you might check your memory in System Profiler. Select About This Mac from the apple menu in the upper left corner, click on More Info, and select Memory.

toxicmyst,
Thanks for documenting this in such great detail! My husband has a powerbook g4 and his HD failed yesterday so we bought a new HD and bought Leopard at the same time thinking how awesome it would be. 😟

It's not awesome at all. Please let us know what happens with your macbook because I was thinking about installing it on my macbook, but after all this sh*t I don't think there's ANY way I'll be touching that **** OS. The worst part about the whole ordeal is that THEY'VE ALREADY GOT OUR MONEY! 😟

My only hope at this moment is that the memory (supposedly apple certified) is the culprit.

I'm seeing this issue on my MacBook Air. It's my first Mac so I don't know what the story is with warranties, tech support, etc. Do I go back to the shop I bought it in (approx. 5 weeks ago) or straight to Apple?

Problem description:

1. After doing a normal “MacOSX update” (to get the latest updates and fixes!), the machine crashed.
2. On reboot, the system failed to find the operating system.
3. Attempting to repair the installation using the installer DVD failed.
4. At this point I had no choice but format and reinstall, which I did.
5. Half-way through the install phase the install hangs and will not continue.
6. The installer log shows:“ifdiskobject (null) was set with a nil DMDisk object"
7. Disk verify utility says the MacOSX partition is fine.
8. I did a repair, installer still failed.
9. Next I tried deleting and recreating the partition, still failed.
10. Then I erased the partition with Zero Out All Data, this still failed.
11. I then tried partitioning with a 50-50 split Mac – Windows partition. Windows Vista installed fine!
12. Finally, I’ve zero’d out the partitions and tried recreating them again.
13. System is still failing to install under any circumstances.
14. I’ve also inspected the install media, I don’t see any scratches etc.

At this point I figure it has to be hardware because I previously installed it without issue from the installation DVDs, and an erase with zero-out is still throwing up errors on the hard-disk.

Start up from the installation disk. After the language screen, select Utilities from the menu at the top and select System Profiler. Look at the Memory section.

When my installation stalled with the message “Extracting” I eventually figured out the installer could not see the RAM I had installed. Replacing it with RAM purchased directly from Apple fixed it and the installation went smoothly.

As for the MacBook Air, that can’t be the problem because you can’t tinker with anything inside the case, like the RAM, battery or anything else.
